Cabin attendants’ duties before take-off.

The passenger cabin is divided into several areas for pre-flight checks and there is a CA responsible for each area. The CAs complete the check using a checklist. The interphone is used during these checks. The CAs perform some routine duties before the passengers arrive.

For 10 years ago smoking on board was allowed and the CAs indicated to passengers areas for smokers and non-smokers. Nowadays on all flights smoking is totally forbidden.

In the departure lounge the ground services announce the boarding of a flight.

When the passengers are settled, the doors are closed. While the aircraft is leaving the stand, taxiing to the runway, lining up and taking off, CAs are busy with passenger services. They check that there is no smoking, the seatbelts are fastened, the seats are in the upright position, tray – tables are stowed, the children and babies are held firmly by adults, all galley and catering equipment is secured properly, internal doors and curtains between different parts of the cabin are secured, overhead bins are closed.

Some airlines provide seatbelts for babies, sweets and candies to prevent ear problems, complimentary drinks, reading material, gifts from the airline, pillows, blankets, slippers, assistance for mothers with babies.

CAs are seated with their seatbelts secured until the captain announces that they are taking off. CAs remain seated with seatbelts fastened until the “Fasten seatbelt” sign is turned off.

How to greet people:

From the very morning until twelve hours: Good morning!

From twelve hours until seventeen or eighteen: Good afternoon!

How to apologize to somebody for something:

- I'm sorry, smoking is prohibited (forbidden).

What to say in giving (handing something):

A day in the life.

03.30 a.m. Good morning!

My alarm is ringing…already…and it’s time to get up for my flight to Tenerife, which is due to leave at 07.00 sharp. I get ready, put on my uniform and make sure I have my passport and regular papers packed in my carry-on bag. We cabin crew have to check at least 1 hour 30 minutes before the aircraft is scheduled to leave, so today that means reporting to work at 05.30. In fact, I’m a little early today and I catch the staff shuttle bus to the briefing room.

05.15 a.m. Fifteen minutes to the pre-flight briefing.

I’m 15 minutes early, which is good, because I have to check my cabin crew manual to refresh my knowledge of the all emergency procedures and the location of the emergency equipment and exits for today’s aircraft, a Boeing 757.

05.30 a.m. The pre-flight briefing

Today’s the pre-flight briefing is held on the aircraft and the purser introduces everyone and takes through the flight details. Usually they are the order of services during the flight, responsibilities for the day and any special points of passengers with special needs. Security and aircraft’s safety are always specially mentioned these days and we’re sometimes asked one or two questions about the emergency procedures. The purser asks a couple today, and I’m pleased to say that I answer correctly.

06.00 a.m. Pre-flight preparations for boarding

This is the time for me and for my team to check the emergency equipment and make sure that there’s a safety instruction card in every passenger’s seat pocket. Then we double check the number of meals on board, the drink trolley, duty-free goods and, of course, stock the toilets with all necessary hand towels and tissues. Then we have enough time to freshen up and get ready to welcome our passengers on board.

1. Exits.

Ladies and gentlemen! Please direct your attention to the safety features demonstration. There are 8 emergency exits in our aircraft. Emergency exits are located on the left and right side: two - at the front, four window exits - over the wings and two - at the rear of the cabin. All exits are equipped with inflatable evacuation slides. Each exit is marked with an "Exit" sign. The floor lighting system along the aisles will guide you to the emergency exits. Please pay attention to the nearest exit. In case of ditching our aircraft is equipped with life vests.

2. Oxygen masks.

In the event of decompression oxygen masks will automatically drop down from the overhead panels. Pull the mask to you. Press the mask tightly to your nose and mouth, fix it as we show you now, breathe normally. If you are travelling with a child, put your own mask on first, then attend to your child.

3. Seat belt.

Your seat belt must be fastened whenever the "FASTEN SEAT BELT" sign is on. To fasten your seat, belt insert the metal tip into the buckle. Tighten the strap. To release the seat belt, lift the buckle cover.
