1. Read and translate the text “Spain”.

Spain is on of Europe's largest countries. It covers more than 80% of the Iberian Peninsula (the name given to the land that lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea) and also includes the Balearic and Canary Islands. The southernmost tip of Spain is just 13 km from Africa.

Spain gets its name from Latin word Hispania. This is what the Romans called the region and it means "the land of rabbits".

It's traditional in Spain to have a siesta (or nap) after lunch. Particularly in rural areas, you'll find villages apparently deserted from 1 pm until about 3.30 pm while everyone has a little snooze.

Bullfighting is one of Spain's most famous spectacles. Although some Spaniards consider them tо be cruel, bullfights (or corrida to use the Spanish term) remain popular and there are more than 400 bullrings in Spain- the largest of which has room for 20000 spectators. Spain has produced great artists such as Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Many of their paintings are on display in the Prado Museumn Madrid, home to one of the finest art collections in the world. Visitors to Barcelona can feast their eyes on the incredible buildings designed by the legendary Spanish architect, Antonio Gaudi's buildings in the Sagrada Familia. Gaudi began the church in 1900 and construction is still going on today... so many years after his death!

The capital of Spain is Madrid. Other major cities are Barcelona, Seville, Valencia.

Among the major exports of Spain are: automobiles, fruit, machinery, petroleum products, shoes, textiles.
