The chair of ceramics was founded in 1946. During 60 years of its existence the chair has prepared near 900 artists of decorative and applied art, who worked and are working in different branches of art, state and public organizations, cultural and artistic institutions. They work as lecturers at higher educational institutions.
Тhe curriculum of the chair includes a wide circle of creative tasks, in particular folk and professional modern ceramics, creative projects, decoration of ceramic wares, applied ceramics, compositions for architectural environment and unique works of exhibition type.
Personal achievements of the chair are very considerable. Its graduates Z. Flinta, I. Mykytiuk, M. Trehubov, Y. Mery, I. Shumskyi, V. Bilous are Honoured Artists of Ukraine, I. Zarytskyi, Y. Motyka, A. Bokotey, L. Medvid, I. Marchuk, Y. Skakun are the People’s artists of Ukraine, Y. Motyka and A. Bokotey are T. Shevchenko prize winners.
The rector of the Academy is academician A. Bokotey, deans of the Academy departments are A. Kalish, T. Yanko, R. Shmahalo, I. Mykytiuk. The vice-rector of scientific work is O. Holubets. All of them are graduates of the chair.
Numerous honoured rewards at international competitions of artistic ceramics as well as at symposiums of ceramics were awarded to the graduates of the chair of artistic ceramics – T. Levkiv, Z. Flinta, R. Petruk, I. Tumanova, Y. Motyka, N. Fedchun, U. Yaroshevych, I. Kovalevych, I. Bereza, T. Bereza, H. Drul, L. Bohynskyi, V. Bondarchuk, S. Andrusiv, M. Didkivskyi.
For years the graduates of the chair have been working as leading artists at the key plants of porcelain in Ukraine: Kyiv (M. Lampeka), Polon (M. Kozak), Braniv (O. Trehubov, V. Lozaniuk), Poltava (I. Vitsko, V. Bilous), Boryslav (M. Samiylenko), Ternopil (S. Havrysh), Synelnyk (O. Vovk).
Since 1998 the chair has been training students according to different educational and qualification levels: Bachelor’s degree, Specialist’s degree, Master's degree.
Participation of its graduates in different exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad, participation in international symposiums and out of plein-airs testifies to the high quality of students’ training. The chair was awarded different diplomas, membership in creative unions, a number of honoured titles, and of State prizes etc.
The graduates of different artistic institutions constitute a considerable part of students who continue their studies at the chair of artistic ceramics after educational qualification levels: Bachelor's degree, Specialist's degree, Master's degree. The chair maintains ties with artistic colleges and artistic schools of Lviv, other cities of Ukraine and foreign countries, organizes exhibitions, excursions and meetings with the students of the schools and colleges. The open days take place every year. The important elements of the study of demands in specialists are links with the ceramic enterprises of different kinds of ownership, educational establishments, where the graduating students of the chair work.
International scientific connections are based on the research of the problem of theory and practice of modern artistic ceramics (Academies of arts in Wroclaw and Riga); new technologies (Latvia, Germany, Poland, Russia, Byelorussia).
Lecturers of the chair are active participants of international artistic plein-airs painting in Solone, Oborinky, Slonzko, Horlitse which take place in Poland. Since 1999 he participants of the plein-airs have been such lecturers of the chair of ceramics as V. Bondarchuk, O. Holubets, M. Malavskyi.
Large contribution into the development of international relations and artistic contacts is made by professor of the Chair of Artistic Ceramics O. Holubets (vice-rector on advanced studies). He establishes contacts between educational institutions, lecturers and students. He was an organizer, co-organizer or counsel, on the Ukrainian side, of many international artistic projects, exhibitions of conferences and other actions, which took place in Poland, Germany, Hungary.
Pedagogical and research work of the lecturers of the chair of artistic ceramics is closely associated with artistic activity of the lecturers, whose creation is an important constituent of the educational process of the academy.
The main trends of the creative activity are artistic ceramics both decorative and applied, exhibition, and also ceramics for architectural environment. The lecturers of the chair work also in other branches of art, such as painting, graphic arts, sculpture, design of interiors.
