The Chair of Monumental and Decorative Sculpture was founded in 1946. The chair works in two directions. The first one consists in training sculptors in monumental and decorative and easel sculpture. The second one is the teaching of the general course of practical sculpture studies for applied sections of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, namely art ceramics, art glass, art metal, art woodware, restoration and conservation of art works, interior design.
The chair had been training specialists in monumental and decorative sculpture from 1946 to 1961. In 1961 there was no admission to the chair. At that time, there was only a general course of sculpture studies for students of applied sections of the institution. In 1987, the admission of students to the Chair of Monumental and Decorative Sculpture was renovated.
The following people were the heads of the chair: 1946-1952 – professor I. Severa; 1952-1957 – professor M. Riabinin; 1957-1962 – professor V. Telishev; 1962-1972 – professor D. Krvavych; 1972-1977 – professor V. Borysenko; 1977-1990 – professor O. Pylev; 1990- till now – professor I. Samotos.
A number of well-known artists in sculpture and art criticism having a very rich creative and scientific-educational experience worked and continue working at the chair. Among them: professor I. All the chair lecturers develop their activity in different branches of sculpture. They have created a lot of works in monumental, monumental-decorative art, park sculptures, art memorial tables (108 works in 1990-2005). The creative activity of the chair members includes a great number of easel sculpture works, plastic art, medal art. During the last years, professors’ and lecturers’ creative works were represented at 29 one-man exhibitions, 56 collective exhibitions and 14 international exhibitions. Students’ works were represented at 20 exhibitions. A lot of interesting experiments take place at sculpture symposia (during the last 5 years there were 15 symposia). The chair has published 27 artistic catalogues and albums. Among the chair members, there are 11 sculptors and lecturers who belong to the National Artists’ Union.
The educational process at the chair is in a close contact with the production and creative activity of the chair graduates. The Bachelors’ and Masters’ diploma works and summer practical works follow the programs and plans worked out according to numerous state and public demands. These creative works are realized in material and are represented at different objects.
The Chair of Monumental and Decorative Sculpture is developing All-Ukrainian and international relations with different educational institutions, art organizations and establishments. The lecturers organize sculpture symposia, where students of the chair also take part. In 2005, an All-Ukrainian sculpture competition took place on the basis of the Lviv National Academy of Arts. A lot of students participated in this competition. Among them there were many students of the Kyiv National Academy of Arts and Architecture, the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Art, the Lviv National Academy of Arts, the Transcarpathian Art Institute, the Kosiv State Institute of Decorative and Applied Art, the Lviv I. Trush State College of Decorative and Applied Art. Such competitions give students the opportunity of close relationship with young Ukrainian and foreign artists. The experience and results showed the necessity and benefit of such competitions, as they are very useful in the methodology of training creative specialists.
