IV. Read and retell the text.

The monumental painting in Western-Ukrainian region has ancient traditions formed under the influence of the temple architecture. As a phenomenon, these traditions are closely related to the sacral art.

Several prominent artists worked in the Western Ukraine. It is worth mentioning such names, traditionally defined by art critics: Y. Kondzelevych, I. Rudkovych, L. Dolynskyi, M. Boichuk, M. Kholodnyi, M. Osinchuk, P. Kovzhun, M. Sosenko (authors of Bohorodchany, Rohatyn, Piatnytsia iconostases).

The origin of artistic educational institutions and unions in Lviv begins with the craft traditions of the medieval city. The rapid growth of cultural and artistic life and particularly of fine arts was observed at the beginning of the 19th century.

In 1887, the Austrian government initiated the opening of artistic and industrial school in Lviv. An exclusive talent of local people of Galicia, Bukovyna and Transcarpathian region was discovered in this branch of culture.

The artistic and industrial school became the basis of the higher art education of the region. In 1946 the Lviv State Institute of Decorative and Applied Art was founded.

The admission of students to the Chair of Monumental and Decorative Painting began with the opening of the Lviv State Institute of Decorative and Applied Art. The first head of the chair was R. Selskyi, the prominent Ukrainian artist, master of painting. Among the best graduates of the chair we can mention the following names: K. Zvirynskyi, D. Dovboshynskyi, V. Patyk, S. Korobchak, T. Maksysko, M. Medvetskyi, A. Zavialov, Edelman, Efendiev, E. Lysyk, M. Andrushchenko, M. Krystopchuk, S. Beznisko, B. Soyka and others. After R. Selskyi, it was D. Dovboshynskyi who became the head of the chair. At that time, the chair was developing actively in the direction of new requirements connected with decorative and applied arts and reducing the institute activity in monumental and easel painting. The chair staff (with D. Dovboshynskyi at the head) elaborated a new position of the chair development ensuring the high level of teaching monumental painting. However, after ceasing the admission to the Chair of Monumental and Decorative Painting and its closing in 1959, the absence of such professional section as the Chair of Monumental Painting had a negative influence on the cultural and artistic environment of all the Ukrainian region.

When the academician E.Mysko became the Rector of the Lviv State Institute of Decorative and Applied Art, the Chair of Monumental Painting was renovated. In 1987 students began studying the speciality “Monumental painting” at the Chair of Academic Painting. With the renovation of the chair, a lot of artists were invited to teach here. Their creative activity determined the important trends in the development of the educational process, the scientific and searching work, the formation of methodology and tactics of the chair existence.

A number of outstanding artists, painters and monumentalists took part in the composition of new principles of the chair functioning. Among them: D. Dovboshynskyi, associate professor, Honoured Artist of Ukraine; E. Lysyk, Honoured Artist of Ukraine, T. Shevchenko prize winner; V. Patyk, Honoured Artist of Ukraine, T. Shevchenko prize winner; K. Zvirynskyi, professor, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine; L. Medvid, Honoured Artist of Ukraine; M. Andrushchenko, Honoured Artist of Ukraine, M. Shymchuk, Honoured Artist of Ukraine, prominent Ukrainian artist and pedagogue K. Zvirynskyi; I. Shumskyi, talented artists and pedagogues, professors A. Maksymenko, V. Moskaliuk and others.

Since 1991, according to the Academic Council’s decision, this section has become a separate Chair of Monumental and Decorative Painting. L. Medvid, Honoured Art Worker, Honoured Artist of Ukraine, Corresponding member of the Art Academy of Ukraine became the head of the chair. The particularity of the chair work consisted in the importance of joining fundamental subjects (drawing, painting) to special subjects (composition, work in material) in the process of unique educational and creative orientation.
