Vasylyk, includes the realization of a long-teem programme of the revival and development of the Ukrainian icon painting with its unique style, the ancient traditions of the joint genres as well as of sacral art, eliminated for the well-known reasons – sacral metal plastics, priest vestment, gold embroidery, book-printing art, art carving etc.
Since the chair foundation the training of specialists in Sacral Art has been provided by the leading artists such as Mykola Bidnyak, T. Shevchenko prize winner, Bearer of the Yaroslav Mudryi’s order, a member of the Association of Mouth-painting artists; Karlo Zvirynskyi, a famous artist and pedagogue, one of the chair founders; Volodymyr Ovsiychuk, Doctor of Art Criticism, T. Shevchenko prize winner, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine; an artist theologist and culture-expert Father Laslo Pushkash; Roman Vasylyk - Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine; a famous artist prof. Mykola Krystopchuk.
Competent scientists and theologists were invited to teach at the chair in different periods of its history: Patriarch of the Ukrainian Autocephlais Orthodox Church Dymytriy Yarema, vice-rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome, Doctor I. Muzychka, rector of the Lviv Seminary of Holy Spirit Father B. Prakh, Doctor of Canon Law Father M. Dymyd, Doctor of Philosophy D. Stepovyk, a famous artist O. Mazuryk (France), a famous designer V. Pankiw (Poland), an art critic V. Hreshlyk (Slovakia), a research worker of the University of Montreal (Canada) Y.Krekhovetskyi, a famous Byzantinist Doctor T. Shpihlik (France).
Experts in sacral art were also engaged in teaching at the chair, among them- K. Markovych, R. Kyslyi, S. Yuzetiv, a restorator of the I-st category L. Skop, as well as young specialists – a graduate of the chair of Art Textile, Candidate of Art Criticism R. Kosiv, a graduate of the Chair of Sacral Art L. Yatsiv, a graduate of the Lublin Catholic University (Poland) I. Shaban.
Creative activity of the lecturers and students of the Chair of Sacral Art is performed in such trends as art interior design of sacral edifices (church polychromy); works of sacral art executed techniques of wall painting, mosaic and stained glass; icon painting; easel painting; exhibiting.
During the period of 1999-2005 the lecturers of the chair organized 18 one-man exhibitions, were the participants of 15 regional all-Ukrainian, international one-man and group exhibitions, arranged 21 exhibition of students’ creative works.
The works of the lecturers and students of the chair executed for the certain establishments, i.e. complex decorating of churches in Ukraine and abroad (Britain, France, Brazil, Romania, Poland), as well as artistic actions such as iconostasis decoration for the liturgy with the Pope John Paul II, etc. deserve one’s special attention.
The enrollment for the course has its specifies. The entrants of the chair, training icon painters, apart from good practical level in drawing, painting, composition must also have peculiar outlook and inner world. For this reason a number of monks and nuns as well as the students who want to acquire some knowledge in sacral art of the Eastern rite enroll for the course.
The expert of the Chair of Sacral Art is provided according to the worked-out educational and professional programmes and the lecturers are the authors of educational textbooks and manuals, recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, among them “The synthesis of Techniques of Monumental Art in Temple Architecture” (M. Krystopchuk); “Ukrainian Sacral Art” (R. Vasylyk); a chapter of the dictionary “The theory and Practice of Sacral Art in Higher Education of Ukraine” in educational manual ”Artistic School in the System of National Education of Ukraine” (R. Vasylyk); “Ukrainian Sacral Art” (co-author R. Vasylyk); a textbook “The History of Ukrainian Art” (v. I was published in 2003, the publication of v. II was planned for 2004 and v. III – for 2005, its co-author is Doctor of Art Criticism professor V. Ovsiychuk). R. Vasylyk is author of a number of publications, as well as the popularizer of Ukrainian sacral art in mass media. The Chair of Sacral Art has trained professionals in sacral art for Ukraine, Slovakia and Brazil.
The students of the chair usually carry out their diploma and course projects at real establishments. Those are projects, stained glass, windows, polychromy, icons for churches in Peremyshl (Poland), Nance (France), the Church of the Nativity of the Holy Mary and the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lviv, the memorial chapel to the killed soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army in the village of Bilyi Kamin’ (Zolochiv region, Lviv oblast), the Chapel of the Ukrainian Navy in Sevastopol, the restoration of the work by the famous artist of the first half of the 20th century Anton Manastyrskyi in the Church of Transfiguration in the town of Boryslav, the icon the Crucifixion with the standing-by for the monastery church of St. Michael and the icinistasis with elements of stained glass for the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Lviv, the altarpieces for the Church of Ascension in Barazh, the stained glass windows for the Church of Transfiguration at the nunnery in the village of Berehy (Lviv oblast), the polychromy of St. Elijah’s Chapel at 4-row iconostasis for St. Dmytriy’s Church in the village of Lisovychi (Lviv oblast), etc.
As far as international cooperation in concerned a research worker of the Institute of Eastern Stydies at the Montreal University (Canada) Father Z. Kolisnyk served his internship at the chair in 2003. Associate professor of the chair R. Kosiv went on internship to a university in Connecticut (USA) in 2003.
The head of the chair professor R. Vasylyk received his training at a university in Parana (the city of Curitiba, Brazil, 2002). As a result there was a group project carried out and a one-man exhibition of R. Vasylyk held in the Central Secretariate of the Cultural Department of Brazil (the city of Curitiba).
The chair cooperates creatively with a number of foreign partners, especially with the Ukrainian Catholic University named after St. Clement (Rome – Lviv); the Prešov University (Slovakia); the University of Parana (Curitiba, Brazil); Hydudorose eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (Hungary); the Institute of Eastern Studies at the University of Montreal (Canada). The chair maintains creative connection with the Lviv, Ternopil, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk organizations of the Artists’ Union of Ukraine (the arrangement of the lecturers’ and students’ exhibitions, participation in organization and work of plein airs, extension courses and training).
