1. The Chair of Restoration, Conservation and Preservation of Works of Art was founded on the 1st of April, 1996.

IV. Read and retell the text:
The official new educational activity of the Lviv National Academy of Arts in the sphere of restoration, conservation and preservation of works of art started on the 7th of April, 1994. The initiators of the opening of the educational activity of this artistic branch in Lviv were the academician Emmanuil Mysko and Myroslav Otkovych, director of the department of the National Scientific Research Restoration Center of Ukraine in Lviv. This initiative was seriously supported by professors D. Krvavych and V. Ovsiychuk. Since then the speciality has functioned as a section of the Interior Design Chair and the Chair of Art Woodware. The Chair of Restoration, Conservation and Preservation of Works of Art was founded on the 1st of April, 1996.
In the academic year of 1996-1997 the Chair of Restoration of Works of Art started the multi-level system training. It began to prepare Bachelors and Specialists. On the 17th of October, 2006 the speciality of Restoration of Works of Art was licensed by the State Accreditation Committee of Ukraine with the 4th level of accreditation with the right to graduate Masters (Resolution of the State Accreditation Committee of Ukraine of № 63 from 26.10.2006). Since its foundation and the head of the Chair has been Yuriy Ostrovskyi.
The teaching staff of the chair is the unity of the prominent extraordinary artistic personalities. Nowadays specialist training is provided with the highly qualified scientific-pedagogical staff, which includes associate professors, Candidates of science O. Protsyk, I Prots, D. Yankovska, Candidate of art criticism, T. Shevchenko prize winner V. Otkovych. An important part in a professional practical preparation of specailists belongs to the leading high category restorers, known in Ukraine and abroad, such as V. Mokriy, L. Razinkova, H. Skop, involved into the educational process of the chair as the specialists in practice. Practical lessons in techniques and technologies of the separate branches of art are taught by Lviv leading artists such as V. Kordiuk, B. Saliy, P. Martynyuk, A. Bulychev. In the sphere of educational activity the chair collaborates (according to the treaties) with the National museum named after A. Sheptytskyi in Lviv ( the classes of the restorer of the higher category V. Mokriy); the Lviv Art Gallery (classes of the restorer of the 1st category L. Razinkova); the Lviv museum of the History of Religion ( classes of the restorer of the 1st category H. Skop); the regional landscape park “Znesinnya”. The basis for conducting summer practical works is the collection of the “Studion”, project and restoration, productive specialized centers and museums in Ukraine and abroad.
During its activity and the stages of the development of the chair managed to reach the maximum of its possibilities in accordance with the state of development of the material, technical and staff equipment level. During the 10 years of its educational activity it managed to revive more than 300 works from the museum collections of Lviv and Lviv region. Educational activity was closely connected with the museum-productive and pedagogical one. It became culturally significant for society and for artistic creative process in general. 6 works were restored in collaboration with the Lviv department of the National Scientific Research restoration center of Ukraine for the National museum. Among them there were the icons and decorative elements of the prominent monument of Bohorodchany iconostasis. 40 works were restored for the Lviv Art Gallery, 8 of them are placed in the constant expositions. Over 90 works were restored for the Lviv Museum of History of Religion. In general, it forms a high valuable index of the economy of state costs spent on restoration and preservation of works from the Museum fund of Ukraine. Twelve exhibitions with the participation of the professors and students of the chair, specialized on restoration, and one international conference were organized. They became a good didactic material for the students’ future teaching and popularization of the educational activity of the chair. It is also significant that during the last 5 years 10 scientific articles were published just by the students of the chair. Five graduates of the chair continue studying at the postgraduate course of the Lviv National Academy of Arts and the institutes of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine (speciality of Art Criticism). Since 2000 95 percent of the graduates have worked according to their speciality.
At present the peculiarity and the reason of the functioning of the chair lie in the fact that it is the only one in Ukraine and in the region to prepare artists-restorers, necessary for the society, because the majority of the art works are constantly being destructed in the process of natural physical ageing even in the conditions of museum conservation. Each of the restored works, except for some limitations, connected with the methods of action, its technology and conditions of preservation are unique. They are interpreted individually. In general the variety of restoration problems is connected with a great amount of works. At the moment they are in the working process at the workshop giving the students an opportunity to get acquainted with a broad range of realization of the technical and esthetic restoration decisions. There is a teaching complex for the fundamental subjects in the chair: general artistic, social-economic, naturally-scientific and professional scientific training. The examination, conservation and restoration of paintings and works of decorative art with the organic base (wood, canvas) are taught thoroughly. The objects of the educational restoration are works of tempera painting (icon painting), oil painting on canvas, polychrome wood sculpture and decorative carving. The acquaintance with the techniques and technologies of the related specializations including decorative art works is held too.
The chair supports international connections with the similar departments of the higher art educational institutions of Poland, particularly with Academies of Fine Art in Krakow and Warsaw. The interchange of students, joint exhibitions and seminars are held. Professors of the chair are on internship at the higher educational institutions and enterprises of Ukraine and foreign countries. Many graduates and students go on internship on the basis of the individual project competition of the Minister of Culture of Poland fund – “Gaude Polonia”.
