The Chair of Art Management was established in the Department of History and Theory of Art of the Lviv National Academy of Arts in 2004. Doctor of Art Criticism, professor O. Bodnar was elected head of the chair. Professional training of Bachelors and Masters in the speciality of “Culture science”, specializing in “Management of social and cultural activity” was started as early as 1997.
The main tasks of the newly established chair are: preparing of professionals of management of social and cultural activity, forming of modern Ukrainian culture development conception and raising its quality level, effective usage of historical, national and cultural achievement of our state, activation of commercial practice in the sphere of Ukrainian culture. To this aim a quite new conception was worked up by the chair and it was approved by the Ministry of Education and Science-Subjects of both cultural studies and management, marketing, economics and business are being energetically worked up and introduced into the educational process.
The Lviv National Academy of Arts is one of the oldest and the best higher schools of Ukraine in the sphere of decorative, applied and pictorial arts. Accordingly, training of professionals in the sphere of management of social and cultural activity is highly adapted to the contemporary needs in culture and art sphere. The specific character of the Chair of Art Management work consists in preparing managers of social and cultural activity not only for work in culture establishments but also for presenting interests of both separate arts and cultural sphere establishments and for work in subdivisions of executive power which form cultural policy and thus will be able to influence the process of cultural development of the region or the state.
Despite its short-term existence the Chair of Art Management has significant achievements. It developed a complex of practical and professional preparing, i.e. supplying the teaching process of art managers with programs, textbooks, manuals, instructions and introducing them into teaching.
Three professors, Doctors of Art, 10 associate professors and 16 Candidates of science are teaching major subjects. Special attention is given to the development of the chair by the head of the chair, Doctor in Art Criticism, professor, head of the specialized academic Council of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, winner of numerous prizes and awards O. Bodnar and the dean of the Department of History and Theory of Art, Doctor of Art Criticism, professor, member of specialized councils R. Shmahalo. Young members of the chair also take an active part in its development. Majority of the chair staff hold scientific degrees and titles or are in their final year of post-graduate studies. This will provide their potential professional improvement and improvement of the chair as a whole.
The teachers and students take an active part in research. It is confirmed by a great number of conferences and publications. Thus, during its lifetime the chair has edited 2 monographic investigations (the course “Organizing of Art Education in Ukraine and abroad” is taught on the basis of this investigation), 7 manuals, about 50 scientific papers and 30 methodical instructions (including syllabuses), edited according to the present requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science.
The students of the Chair of Management of Social and Cultural Activity have been more than once prize winners, got distinctions of various institutions for their merits and won grants in different programs. The chair focuses on practical implementation of obtained knowledge in art management during educational and industrial practice and tries to organize a close collaboration with artists, museums, art galleries, educational establishments not only in western region of Ukraine but in the whole country and abroad. For 3 years running the chair is a co-organizer of the international schools and seminars “Economics in culture, Culture in economics”. Both teachers and students of the chair participate in them actively. For more than 8 years representatives of the chair are co-organizers and active participants of international plein airs in textiles in the village of Yavoriv ( Kosiv district of Ivano-Frankivsk region) and in organizing exhibitions in Lviv, Kyiv, Surgut (Russia).
International links of the chair are developing effectively. They set up collaboration with the Higher Economic School in the town of Staliova Volia and the Krakow Academy of Arts (Poland), Department of Culture, Youth Policy and Sports, College of Russian Culture in Surgut (Khanty-Mansi district, Tiumen region), artists of Moldova Artists’ Union and Moldovian Department of Culture, realizing with them common projects and arrangements. Professors of the chair take part in international artistic and scientific projects and symposia in the Chech Pepublic, Austria and the USA.
The chair long-term task is engaging of students in realization of social and cultural projects on the level of the city, region and state. The main aim of the chair activity is training specialists of the high quality who could effectively form culture policy as a key element of Ukraine’s development strategy and who could form conditions for better use of personal resources and financial means in order to develop culture, to favour preservation of the material as well as immaterial social culture, to adapt market of cultural and artistic production for contemporary conditions, to favour expanding and stabilization of non-commercial sector of cultural sphere, to represent native cultural achievements at an appropriate level in the world.
