The Chair of Clothing Design has old European traditions. It has scientific, artistic, methodic achievements, generally acknowledged in Ukraine and outside its borders.
To the formation of Lviv fashion school contributed many factors, such as, ethnical phenomenon of the region with its rich traditions, with developed art crafts, first of all tailoring and sowing, on the one hand, and the established system of specialized workshops and schooling, which developed in interrelationship with Polish, Austrian art mediator center and without a doubt, traditions of rich national cultures with continuous contacts, on the other hand.
The section of clothing design was founded in 1959 within the Chair of Artistic Textile, which became a separate chair later on. Over 45 years it has been training qualified clothing designers in the field of creative-experimental and industrial design in three specializations: art level clothing design, knitted wear clothing design, and articles of leather and other materials.
A new speciality of artist designer at the Institute was started by the artists-pedagogues, who have experience of practical work at enterprises of manufacturing industries, in the houses of fashion. They, the instructors, worked out a system of special discipline and their scientific methodical providing, brought up more than one generation of artists in the genre of costume, which got high renown of the school in the times of the former Soviet Union. Established in the 80’s, experiential-creative amalgamation “Prestige” (the head O. Korovytskyi), got recognition for the realization of students’ creative ideas in cooperation with all sowing colleges in Lviv and presenting the design of young designers in the country and abroad.
The chair gained an important role in the mid 90’s, the time of active searching for reformation in educational methods and exhibition activity.
World globalization processes, market economy, dynamic advancement of the society determine the search for new methodological approach, fast self-renovation, learning foreign experience, reorientations on priorities in education, determine a new quality of specialists. Today this is an ideologist of new Ukrainian fashion, who reacts actively to individual and public needs of the society; this is an artist-designer, a scientist-explorer, whose sphere of activities is polyfunctional.
Modern fashion tendencies, activation of different directions of design promote the search for mobile methods of acquiring knowledge in historical, cultural, artistic, technological problems in preparation of an artist in the genre of costume.
The Chair of Clothing Design is distinguished among other educational centers of the given profile, by the preservation and development of distinctive national art traditions, the achievement of creative interpretation of national and world cultures.
Its educational activity the chair realizes on qualification levels: Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, focusing special attention on training specialists of a higher level of Master’s degree, improving scientific-exploring, practical-creative work, working out conceptual projects of costumes of different functions: every day, festive, exhibition, and others.
The lecturers, students and graduates of the chair are annual participants and laureates of national and many foreign competitions, fashion festivals, art projects (“Days of National Fashion”, “Smirnoff prize in Fashion”, Spinners”, “Fashion Season”), in Canada, Great Britain, France, Poland, Slovakia, Russia. They efficiently work as artist-designers at enterprises, in fashion houses, head different firms (T. Mayevska, G. Zabashta, O. Hanets, S. Semenko, O. Karavanska, R. Bohurtska, R. Poliakova, O. Muha, M. Kostelna, O. Dats, G. Bublyk and others).
The staff of the chair is highly qualified: including the members of Design Union of Ukraine and the members of Artists’ Union of Ukraine: the head of the chair, professor, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine O. Korovytskyi; professor, Candidate of Art criticism Y.Tkanko; professor, Doctor of Art Criticism R. Chuhay; associate professors M. Bezpalkiv, V. Shelest, O. Holovnia, S. Zablotska, T. Umnova, T. Kechedzhi, O. Fedyna; senior lecturers O. Neshenko, G. Zubchenko, O. Myronovych, S. Yarych, I. Zhuk, I. Hrytsiuk, L. Ivaniv, I. Khomiak; lecturers with broad experience, and also younger generation of lecturers L. Rudyk, A. Dmytrenko, V. Sydorenko, M. Petriakova; masters of practical training O. Holiak, L. Paleta, O. Shykh, P. Stashkiv, A. Halabuda. All of them work for success of the Lviv school of design.
The achievements of the chair are in accordance with revolutionary changes which are embodied in new directions and methods of professional art costume, growth of its prestige in Ukraine.
