IV. Read and retell the text: The history of the Chair of Art Woodware begins in 1946. During the period of its existence its name was changed many times:

1945-1946 – the Furniture and Interior Section, head of the chair: associate professor, famous Lviv architect E. Nahirnyi;

1951-1960 - the Chair of Art Treatment of Wood, heads of the chair: B. Krychevskyi (1951-1952), F. Pavliuchenko (1952-1954), M. Smirnov (from 1954);

1960-1975 – the Chair of Furniture Design and Interior Decoration,

heads of the chair: M. Smirnov (1954-1968), associate

professor

M. Vendzylovych (since 1968);

1975-1982 –the Chair of Furniture and Interior Design, head of the

chair: associate professor S. Myhal (from 1978);

1982-1989 – the Chair of Furniture Design, head of the chair: Candidate

of architecture, associate professor S. Myhal (1978-1989);

from 1989 – the Chair of Art Woodware, heads of the chair:

associate professor I. Ivaniv (1989-1996), D. Hrabar (from

1996);

from 2002 - the head of the chair is acting associate professor V. Tarnavskyi.

During the period of its existence the chair has been training specialists for the speciality 2229 “Interior and Outfit”. From 1982 the specialization was “Furniture Design”, and from 1989 it was converted into the speciality 0520 “Decorative and Applied Art”, specialization “Art Woodware”. From 1982 up to 2006 the chair trained 313 specialists. During the last 26 years the chair has been training specialists only on full time study form. Since 1989 the chair has enrolled 10 students, and since 1999 – 8 students. The entrance competition is close to 1,5 person for a place.

In 1997 the chair started training specialists according to a multilevel form of education (Bachelor's degree, Specialist’s degree, Master's degree).

The Chair of Art Woodware is the only chair of this kind in Ukraine. Its search and theoretical-conceptual activities, as well as its decorative and applied projection embrace the Western Ukrainian region, namely Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Transcarpathian, Chernivtsi and other regions. Most of the chair graduates mainly work mainly in these regions. They obtain different posts in state and private establishments and companies, connected with woodwork, furniture design, interior and landscape art decoration (decorative compositions, wooden sculpture, small architectural forms and etc.). Most of the graduates are engaged in teaching in art schools, colleges, lyceums, high educational institutions and as well as in administrative work in art unions, museums, some of them obtain posts of chief artists of the city. Most of the graduates work creatively, and constantly take part in different exhibitions not only in Ukraine but also abroad.

The Chair of Art Woodware teaches students to create exclusive furniture, avant-guard design, extraordinary decoration of interiors and at the same time to master restoration skills, to renew wooden architectural elements and ancient furniture.

The Western Ukrainian region was always famous for gifted wood carvers, skilful masters, who made art elements of everyday life, wooden toys. Ukrainian wood artists made their own contribution to cultural acquirement of Ukraine by decorating wooden churches and by creating small architectural forms (signs, roadside crosses, wells, wooden sculptures, etc.).

The Chair of Art Woodware is the fundamental educational and scientific base, which continue traditions of Ukrainian schools of art woodware, and at the same time it increases horizons of vision of a modern painter, gives him a sense of professional dignity and a chance to find his own place in conditions of private possession on the market.

Since 2001 the chair has made new studying programs for masters training. Their post-graduate studies and their works at the chair for making actual creative and scientific problems are foreseen in future. These problems arise in new conditions of state development.

The period of 1999-2005 was important to elaborate methods and to work out pedagogical practice of expert training to obtain the educational qualification level of "Master". The chair has a high enough indicator of the personnel provision with the training of such experts (80 percent). It helped to provide not only educational and methodical work in training of experts (educational and working programs, methodical recommendations in specialized subjects of educational qualification level "Master"), but also to develop the general strategy of a master scientific work. Among the positive consequences of such work there is an increasing requirement for graduates to receive the second "Master degree", given during the additional year of studying.

Along with drawing, painting and sculpture as fundamental subjects of the chair there is composition and work in material. They help to develop individual creative possibilities, to form three-dimensional conception, connecting the experience of previous historical traditions with searching new expressive ways and techniques.

The professional training of future graphic and decorative artists, in the field of art woodware, is realized in consecutive increasing task complexity and expressive ways. Before the accomplishment of every task the students attend the course of lectures. It will acquaint them with the basic theoretical principles, categories and laws of building different kinds of plastics, which have esthetic shapes, constructions and are convenient for using exclusive furniture ensemble or separate product for home or office.

The courses of theoretical and practical tasks are harmoniously balanced and are elaborated by the leading lecturers of the chair under the supervision of the famous artist, senior lecturer V. Tarnavskyi, participant of many exhibitions, an artist of numerous creations in private collections and establishments. Among them there is a famous artist, professor I. Stefiuk, participant of the exhibitions, namely the exhibition "Modern Ukrainian Art" (UNESCO, Paris 2004) and the author of numerous creations in private collections and in establishments; Candidate of science, associate professor V. Zhyshkovych, author of numerous monographs about wooden plastics.

The associate professor I. Ivaniv is the famous constructor who has authorized certificates of inventions. The associate professor D. Hrabar, famous artist, works on plastic arts, painting, monumental art and is the author of scientific research about the Lviv gates. The lecturer V. Ivanyshyn, a famous wooden plastic artist, is the participant of a lot of exhibitions, namely the exhibition “Modern Ukrainian Art" (UNESCO, Paris 2004) and works in establishments.

The lecturer I. Korol, a famous artist, works in wooden plastics. His works were used for the decoration of many establishments.

Theoretic disciplines are design and perspective on a higher profession level. They are taught by the senior lecturer L. Uhryn.

The lecturers of high level R. Buchak, V. Mamchur, I. Zvarych, V. Stebeletskyi teach practical tasks.

The Chair of Art Woodware graduates unique specialists of the highest level. Each year the demand for decorative-applied art specialists, who works in wood, has considerably risen due to the increase of social and house building of European standards. The lecturers and students of the chair take active part in exhibitions. The chair was awarded the diplomas for taking part in the international exhibition “Gal Expo”. The students of the chair repeatedly took part in professional plein airs in Poland, on the republican level, exhibitions, competitions held within the frameworks of the three art academies of Ukraine (Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv), creative performances, dedicated to the holiday of our city.

To obtain the Bachelor’s degree the graduates of the chair study for four years. They may work at art educational institutions of the 3rd level of accreditation.

On getting Specialist’s degree (6 years studying) and Master’s degree (7 year studying) the graduates may work as lecturers at different art educational institutions of the 4th level of accreditation and be engaged in scientific activity. Our graduates have obtained such posts:

M. Boldyjar – dean of the Transcarpathian Art Institute;

M. Hodanych – lecturer of Transcarpathian Art Institute;

V. Homyk – head of the chair of the Lviv Art College named after I.Trush;

I. Zvarych – lecturer of the Lviv National Academy of Arts;

V. Stebeletskyi – master of practical training;
