The Chair of History and Theory of Art was founded in 1946 and up to 1956 was called “The Chair of History of Applied and Decorative Art”. At different times, S. Sudakov, M. Zemtsov fulfilled the duties of the head of the chair and from 1951 E. Potapova did. At the beginning of 1950s E.Holubova, E Tsulko, I. Seniv worked at the chair. O.Charnavskyi, Candidate of Art Criticism, came to teach at the chair in 1954. In 1956 the reduction of the academic hours brought to the situation when O.Charnavskyi was the only full-time lecturer of the History of Art . The chair was joined to the Chair of the Fundamentals of Marxism and Leninism. In 1960-70s Candidates of Art Criticism P.Tsebenko, Y. Lashchuk, P. Zholtovskyi, V. Ovsiychuk, V. Lyubchenko, B. Zapasko was elected the head of the Chair of History of Art (he hold the post up to 1999). The renovation of the Chair of History of Art raised sufficiently its authority and importance of the art disciplines in educational process and added up to the activation of the scientific work of the lecturers and students.

In 1989 new lecturers O. Rybak, H. Stelmashchuk, M. Bilan joined the chair. In 1991 the chair started a post-graduate course. In 1992 R. The first graduation of arts critics in 1996 proved that the chair, constantly improving their skills and methods of teaching, makes an important contribution to the upbringing of a new generation of specialists in the branch of the history and theory of Ukrainian art criticism. These publications were translated into English by a student Y. Holod.

Twice a year post-graduates’ make their reports and the themes of their theses are confirmed (45 post-graduates and more than 30 research students study at the post-graduate course). Two members of the staff Kravchenko and L. Tsymbala work for the Doctor's degree: Y. Zapasko and H.
