Unit II Lesson 1 profession of an architect
An architect is a person trained to plan and design buildings, and
oversee their construction. To practice architecture means to provide
services in connection with the design and construction of buildings
and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as
their principal purpose human occupancy or use. Etymologically,
architect derives from the Latin architectus, which derives from the
Greek arkhitekton (arkhi-, chief + tekton, builder), i.e., chief builder.
Professionally, an architect's decisions affect public safety, and thus
an architect must undergo specialized training consisting of advanced
education and a practicum (or internship) for practical experience to earn
a license to practice architecture.
Can you imagine how fine it is to be an architect, to build houses,
schools, factories, towns, and bridges? This profession combines skills from the architecture and general
crafting disciplines. That is why I was interested in such subjects as
mathematics, geometry and painting. For me architecture is a real art. It plays an important role in the
formation of our emotions, tastes and feelings, it influences on our views
outlook and mood. It enriches our inner world. It is very difficult to make some project, to bring into focus all that
is most important and significant. But I hope that with learning and
self-improving day I will succeed in the profession of an architect.
Architecture is a social art that touches all human beings at
all levels of their existence everywhere and everyday. This is the only
discipline, which encompasses the four major fields of
human endeavor: Humanities, Science, Art, and Technology, actually
putting into practice the professional inputs drawn from them.
sum, Architecture is the matrix of human civilization - an authentic
measure of the social status, and an evocative expression of the
ethos of an era.
The demands on the profession over the years have become
much more complex in nature and much wider in scope.
Architecture uses the philosophic wholesomeness of Humanities,
the logical rationalism of Science, the passionate imagination
of Art and the inexhaustible resources of Technology. It calls
for originality, creativity, conceptualization, perception, aesthetic
values, and a holistic judgment of people, places, objects and events.
Urban Design is architecture of the cities, highly complex and
gargantuan in scale. The primary aim of urban design is to
imbibe and maintain a sense of identity and harmony among
buildings, open spaces and other structures by means of a
pleasant and memorable visual imagery throughout the length
and breadth of an urban setting.
