Fourth year Conversation Test 1 Books and reading

1. Answer the following questions in written form:

1. If given a choice what would you rather read a novel or short stories in book form? Why?

2. A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. Is that true?

3. Do you agree with the statement that no furniture is so charming as books, even if you never open them and read a single word? Give your reasons.

4. Do you agree with the proverb: "Books and friends should be sew but good"? Give your reasons.

5. A man ought to read just as inclination leads him, oughtn't he? Don't forget that what he reads as a task will do him little good.

6. Why is the concentration of young children today greatly reduced compared with that of similar children only 20 years ago?

7. What kind of literacy will be required of the global village citizens of the 21-st century?

1 Answer the following questions in written form:

1. Do you like opera? Do you agree with the opinion that operas are hard to follow while musicals are more up-to-date and easier to understand? Give your reasons.

2. What role does music play in your life? Do you want music just to make you happy or does the music that you prefer vary with your mood? How does it vary?

3. Do you think that at school music should be given the same emphasis as subjects such as maths, literature, etc?

4. What is your favourite instrument? Can you play it? Does it help you to understand music?

e) critics' point of view and yours about the event.

3. There are world-wide complaints about the effect of rock. Psychologists say that listening to rock music results in "escapism" (abandoning social responsibilities). What would you say? Discuss this problem. Split into buzz groups of 3-4 students each.

6. Television is broadening people's horizons, isn't it?

2. What evening's viewing would you recommend for a foreign visitor who is very interested in learning more about our country and its people? Discuss in pairs the pros and cons of each programme touched upon.
