PRESENTER Hello, and welcome to our programme 'Young hero or heroine of the week'. The subject this week is Cindy Talbot, a final year college student, who was on the third day of her five-day solo-hiking trip through a forested wilderness when she was 1) _____ by lightning. Lightning kills nearly a hundred Americans each year, more than 2) ________ or tornadoes, and to survive a direct hit is almost a miracle. Luckily, Cindy was 3) _______ and we are fortunate to have her with us in the studio today.
CINDY Hi!
PRESENTER Tell me, Cindy, what were you actually doing when the lightning 4) ________?
CINDY Well, I'd noticed the thunderclouds 5) _______ and I was, well, resting on a rocky peak people call Eagle Peak, when I heard the thunder 6) __________in the distance, and I was rather unnerved. Fortunately for me, Rod and Mark, the two guys who came 7) __ ___ _______ were driving back home in their pickup ... they'd been cruising around in the forest checking their traps, I think. I must admit I thought the thunder sounded 8) _____ ______. So I said to myself: 'Cindy, time to get a move on' ... you see I didn't want to 9) ____ _____ in a storm like that. But, I was too late, I guess. I remember when the 10) _______ started ... and it must have lasted for about an hour, ... at least an hour ... I knew it wasn't going to stop just like that, so I 11) _______under some trees.
PRESENTER Not a very wise thing to do considering it was an electric storm, or so I'm told!
CINDY I didn't have much option, to tell the truth. Everything happened so quickly and there didn't seem to be anywhere else around where I might find shelter. But eventually the sun came out and the rain started to move away, so I came 12) _____ ___ _____ the trees to dry off a little bit. And then, well, I'd just put my backpack on - it has a metal frame, by the way! - when the whole world exploded, and I felt an electrical charge 13) _______through my body. It was literally 'a bolt out 14) ___ ___ ______’! I realised that by some miracle I was still alive and had to get help. But I couldn't move my legs, so I had to 15) _____. It sure was heavy going, but after about an hour I reached a wet, muddy kind of track in a clearing in the forest, and was found by Rod and Mark, the two guys with the fur business. When they found me, I don't think they thought there was a 16) ____ ___ ______ in my story at first! Rod told me later that he thought what I'd told him was a bit 17) __________, to say the least! They said they'd seen this 18) __________ object – seemed to be kind of sprawling across the road … not moving, but it wan’t a fallen tree — it looked human. I thought: Gee, thanks!
