ENGLISH IS THE LANGUAGE OF COMMUNICATION

Everybody knows his own language, but it is useful to know foreign languages. Knowledge of foreign languages helps us to develop friendship and understanding among people. People of different countries and nations have to get along well with the progress in world trade and technology as well as with each other.

English is used not only in England, but also in other countries. It is the official language of the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. There are more than 1 billion speakers of English in the world. It’s spoken all over the world because it’s the language of computers, science, business, sport and politics. It is the universal language of international aviation, shipping, sports and medicine.

Despite the great distances separating five English-speaking communities from each other and from the British Isles and great social and cultural differences between them, the forms of English which they use remain mutually intelligible. But each area of the English-speaking world has developed its own special characteristics, its own vocabulary and pronunciation characteristics. That is why there are a number of points of difference in spelling between the English of the United States and that of Great Britain. Many US spellings are usual, or acceptable, in Canada. The major differences are in pronunciation, and, to a lesser degree, in vocabulary and grammar.

Nowadays it’s really important to know English. If you like traveling you can go anywhere without being afraid that other people will not understand you. It is difficult to visit countries, when you don’t know the language of these countries. If you know the language of the country, where you are going to, it will be easy to travel there. If you want to ask something, you can do it in English. During your travelling you can see a lot of advertisement, signboard, and names in the streets. They are in foreign languages. Very often they are in English. If you know English, you can read and understand them. Speaking English you can read newspapers, magazines and original books by great writers or watch satellite TV programs.

Now we buy many clothes from other countries. If you know English well, you can read something about the size of this or that thing. It is also clear for you what it is made of.

Also English is very important to find a job. You can find a nice job abroad or have a huge competitive advantage against the applicant for the position.

How can you learn English? First of all you must read a lot. You can try to learn few new words every day. To remember words better you can put them into groups. Listen to songs in English and try to recognize the words. Watch different films in English. You can make some pen-friends from any English-speaking country. It will help you improve your writing and speaking skills in your English. You will learn a lot of new things about cultures and traditions of other countries. As one proverb says, a new language is a new world!
