Seminar 7 Expressive means, stylistic devices, means of foregrounding

  1. The function of expressive means. Prove that expressive means can exist on graphical, phonetic, morphological and syntactical levels. Do they belong to automatization or actualization? Why?

  2. Stylistic devices, their difference from expressive means. Prove that stylistic devices can exist on different levels. Say if they belong to automatization or actualization. Why?

  3. Galperin's classification of lexical and syntactical stylistic devices. Give examples.

  4. Means of foregrounding, their difference from stylistic devices. The role of micro- and macrocontext in the formation of means of foregrounding.

  5. Convergence of stylistic devices. Prove that convergence is created by means of different levels.

6. Defeated expectancy, what it is based upon? The role of micro- and macrocontext in creating defeated expectancy.

7. Coupling. Prove that it can exist on any level.

Seminar 8 Types of rendering speech

1. A literary work as a unity of two planes: the plane of the characters and the plane of the narrator.

2. Direct speech is one of the main means rendering the speech of the characters. Its peculiarities on the graphical, phonetic, lexical, morphological, syntactical, stylistic level.

  1. Indirect speech, its peculiarities on different levels, difference from direct speech.

  2. When there is no strict borderline between the plane of the characters and the plane of the narrator there appears represented speech. Characterize this type of speech on different levels. Its difference from direct and indirect speech. Their meeting points.

  1. Uttered and inner represented speech, their difference.
