THE STORY OF THE BOY WHO «COULD DO BETTER»

Episode 8

Appleford is a special dyslexic boarding and day school. Tim’s needs were met immediately, both in the teaching and pastoral care, and the boarding option was suddenly seen as an opportunity, not a threat. The school’s aim is to build up the self-esteem of children who come to them already damaged. Here they are never presented with a blank page. Instead there are tick boxes, questions read out repeatedly for them to absorb, essays relayed on tapes, and visual aids to help their eager minds’ absprb information. They are loved and nurtured, given coping strategies and disciplines. The atmosphere of safety and support encourages the children to accept and help each other with their disabilities, while discovering their innate intelligence, untapped for years.

Text 9 learning disabilities parti

Learning disabilities is a universal problem that occurs in all cultures and countries in the world. In all cultures there are children who have severe difficulty in learning oral language, reading, writing, or doing mathematics, despite the fact that they seem to have normal intelligence. The term «children with specific learning disabilities» means those children who have a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written. The disorder may manifest itself in imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations. Such disorders include such conditions as perceptual handicaps, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia. Such term does not include children who have learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor handicaps, of mental retardation, of emotional disturbance, or of environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage. There is a growing concern for children and youth with learning disabilities.
