ВСТУП
Методичні вказівки призначено для студентів 1 курсу напряму підготовки «Екологія, охорона навколишнього середовища та збалансоване природокористування» денної форми навчання.
Усім текстам, що розміщені у методичному посібнику, передують передтекстові вправи, спрямовані на запам’ятовування складних для вимови слів, розрізнення значень інтернаціональних та багатозначних слів і термінів; після кожного тексту подається велика кількість вправ на удосконалення володіння термінологічною лексикою студентами напряму підготовки «Екологія, охорона навколишнього середовища та збалансоване природокористування»: розрізнення синонімів, антонімів, переклад слів, словосполучень та речень іноземною та українською мовами тощо.
Тематика текстів, комунікативна спрямованість вправ сприяють активізації навчальної діяльності студентів та досягненню цілей навчання іноземної мови в технічному вузі.
Мета вказівок – розвиток комунікативних вмінь та навичок різних видів мовленнєвої діяльності, а також навичок анотування та реферування літератури за спеціальністю. При відборі текстів автори прагнули того, щоб кожний текст мав загальнонауковий характер (був зрозумілий і корисний студентам напряму підготовки «Екологія, охорона навколишнього середовища та збалансоване природокористування») та був насичений лексикою, яка пов’язана з науковою роботою. Активний лексичний і граматичний мінімум визначається темами вказівок.

The problem of environmental protection
Environmental protection is the main problem facing humanity nowadays. It is a system of measures aimed at the conservation, rational utilization, and, where possible, renewal of natural resources, both living (flora and fauna) and non-living (picturesque landscapes, natural and cultural landmarks). These measures also include the control and elimination of environmental pollution (air, water, soil) and the maintenance of balanced ecosystems.
The image of a sick planet has become firmly established in the public mind lately. Ten years ago the word «ecology» hardly means anything for the majority of people, but today we can't help bearing it in our minds. It has happened because of the growing effect of the rapid industrial development of the natural world which has negative features of its own. As a matter of fact the state of environment has greatly worsened lately.
There is no doubt that soil, water and air are contaminated with toxic wastes. Over the past few years we have been constantly speaking about ozone holes, droughts, high level of radiation, about food contaminated with chemicals. Scientists in many countries are very much concerned about drastic changes in weather patterns. The worst drought, the mildest winter and the most devastating hurricanes have become typical in those parts of the world where they used to be a rare occurrence. Weather patterns have been changing recently due to the global warming-up process and its major reason – the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is created by carbon dioxide emissions, released by industrial facilities and a constantly increasing number of cars. Thus it is of vital importance that the world should start cutting down the release of gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect.
