THE PAST INDEFINITE TENSE
Утворюється додаванням закінчення -ed до інфінітива правильних дієслів без частки to та ІІ форми для неправильних дієслів:
to ask – asked to take – took
to like – liked to spend – spent
to study – studied to go – went
to cry – cried to put where – put
Заперечна форма дієслова утворюється з допоміжного дієслова to do в Past Indefinite, заперечної частки not та інфінітива основного дієслова без частки to:
They did not answer me. Вони не відповіли мені.
She did not know it. Вона не знала цього.
В усному мовленні замість did not звичайно вживається скорочена форма didn`t.
Питальна форма правильних і неправильних дієслів утворюється з допоміжного дієслова to do в Past Indefinite (did) та інфінітива основного дієслова без частки to. Допоміжне дієслово ставиться перед підметом.
You went to the forest yesterday.
Did you go to the forest yesterday? Didn`t you go to the forest yesterday? Where did you go yesterday? When did you go to the forest?

Коли треба поставити питання до підмета, вживаються займенники who, what та дієсловo ставиться в 3-ї особі однини:
Who saw her? Who found a job? Who read this book? Who built a house?
Past Indefinite вживається для вираження минулої закінченої дії, що не має зв’язку з теперешнім часом і вживається з прислівниками та словос-полученнями yesterday, the day before yesterday, last week(year, night), late September, two hours(weeks, days) ago, two hours later, long ago, the other day, in 1953.
She was on holiday yesterday. He called me up 2 hours ago. I was born in 1984.
