Alex: Hi, John! I rang the travel agent …um TOURS ARE US, and spoke about day tour to the snow.
John: Good, what did you find out?
Alex: Well, it’s quite cheap really. We can go skiing for the day for $125 each.
John: $125 each. That’s great. The last travel agent I rang quoted $190 a person. What’s the catch?
Alex: I don’t think there is one. We would have to get a coach at about six in the morning and we get back at eight at night. No frills though - so we have to make one lunch arrangements.
John: Still, that’s a full day and no one has to drive.
Alex: Do you think Sam and Penny would like to come along?
John: Yeah, maybe. Why don’t you give them a call and ask? Have you already made a booking?
Alex: No, not yet. I told the agent I had to talk to you, guys, before I could make a booking. We’ll get a discount if we book and pay a deposit a week before we go.
John: Well, let’s do it. You make the booking. Even if Sam and Penny don’t want to come, we’ll find someone else to make up the numbers.
QUESTIONS:
1. Who is Alex phoning?
2. What’s the catch?
3. Has Alex already made a booking?

To finish off airclass today I’d like to give you some facts and figures about one of the most successful commercial aircraft the 747. Air Pacific International Airlines fleet contains 26 747s, the biggest is the 747-400. Well, all our 747-400s I can figure with economy, business and first-class sitting arrangements, so typically our aircraft can hold up to 416 passengers. Our aircraft are fitted with proton witny engines which produce 291,57 kilo Newtons of thrust. 747 has a maximum take-off weight of 369,900 kilograms and a large proportion of the take-off weight is actually fuel, carrying 216,840 litres of fuel at take off. This sounds like a lot of fuel and it is. The 747 burns up approximately 14 000 litres of fuel per hour and with the 747-400 I would fly from Melbourne to Los Angeles or Singapore to London non-stop. You can say why and the maximum range is 13,450 kilometres that’s why there’re called long-haul aircraft. The 747-400 is also a very fast aircraft. One of the fastest commercial airliner. It typically flies at about Mach 0.85 or 912 kilometres per hour at cruise altitude. Now, what else can I tell you. Well, as you know, the 747-400 is the biggest aircraft in the Boeing family. Its wingspan is 64,4 meters and it’s 70,7 meters in length. The tail is a huge 90,4 metres high making it visibly taller than its sister 767. And there is a plenty of room inside too. The cabin is 6,1-metre-wide inside, 6,13-metre-wide outside. So you can see why this is one of the most successful commercial airliners in the world with already either over 30 years of successful flights.
QUESTIONS:
1. How many Boeing 747 does Air Pacific International Airlines contain?
2. How many passengers can 747-400 hold?
3. What is the maximum takeoff weight of 747-400?
4. How much fuel does 747-400 carry?
5. How many litres of fuels does 747-400 burn up per hour?
6. Why is 747-400 the fastest aircraft?
7. What is the visible difference between 747-400 and 767?
8. Why is 747-400 called long-haul aircraft?
