What’s Tastier?
Match the animal to his or her favorite food
milk and meat a dog
oats and barley a cow
tender young grass a ram
hay a horse
camel thorn a cat
a big bone a camel
A
long time ago, the animals argued about which food was the tastiest.
The cow said, “There is nothing in this world that compares with
the sweet taste of hay. There is no better food!”
The ram said, “Yes, hay is good. But tender young grass is tastier.”
T
he
horse said, “And what about oats and barley? These crunchy grains
are delicious!”
“No,” said the cat. “There is nothing tastier in this world than milk and meat!”
The dog disagreed. “Only I know what is the tastiest of all—a big bone! There is nothing tastier than a big bone!”
T
he
last animal to speak was the camel. “It’s useless to argue, my
friends. None of you have traveled the steppe as much as I have. I
know what is the tastiest food of all—camel thorn.”
“Noooooo!” shouted all the other animals.
The Eagle and the Raven
O
nce
the eagle met the raven and said, “Hey, Raven! You and I are both
birds. So tell me, how come such a meek bird like you gets to live
for three hundred years, but I only get to live for thirty years?”
“You eat live animals,” answered the raven. “You drink warm blood. But I eat dead animals,” said the raven.
The
next day the eagle decided to go hunting with the raven. They flew
for miles over the open steppe. Then they saw the body of a dead
horse. The raven landed on the corpse of the horse and started to
tear the flesh with his beak. The eagle thought t
hat
if he ate the dead horse, he would live for three hundred years too,
so he took a bite of the dead horse, but then he spit it out.
“Yuck!” he said. “Who wants to eat such disgusting food for
three hundred years? It’s better to live for only thirty years and
eat what I like!”
What do you think?
Do you agree with the eagle? Why or why not?
Make a list of five of your favorite foods. Put them in order from most favorite to least favorite. Can you find anyone in your class who has the same favorite foods? Are they in the same order?
