Вживання іменника у функції означення
У англійській науково-технічній літературі дуже часто іменник без зміни своєї форми вживається у функції означення. Структура іменник + іменник 4- іменник (і т.д.) викликає труднощі при перекладі, оскільки іменники стоять підряд. Головним словом в такій групі є останнє, а всі попередні іменники є визначеннями до нього.
Деякі іменники-визначення можуть перекладатися прикметниками, наприклад:
Ваг - стрижень, magnet - магніт, bar magnet - стрижньовий магніт;
Canе - очерет, sugar - цукор, cane sugar - тростинний цукор,
sugar cane - цукровий очерет;
machine building industry - машинобудівна
промисловість;
oil - gas industry - нафтогазова промисловість.
Проте подібний спосіб перекладу не завжди можливий; часто такі визначення доводитися перекладати іменниками в непрямих відмінках або прийменниковими зворотами, при цьому доцільно користуватися “правилом ряду”. Порядок перекладу обумовлюється смисловими зв’язками між означеннями і означуваним словом.
Переклад слід почина- ти справа наліво з останнього іменника, а іменники, що стоять перед ним в ролі визначення, потрібно перекладати українською мовою іменниками в непрямих відмінках (частіше родовому) або прийменниковим зворотом. Виходячи з контексту, встановлюється зв’язок між визначеннями, наприклад:

В даному випадку перше слово (electric), у свою чергу, є визначенням другого (equipment).
