  1. Read and translate the text. Write an essay of the text expressing your arguments for or against the author’s views on the problems of 1) gas storage and extraction during pe- riods of low demand; 2) secondary purposes of gas storage.

Natural gas is often stored in underground caverns formed inside depleted gas reservoirs from previous gas wells, salt domes, or in tanks as liquefied natural gas. Storage near the ultimate end-users helps to best meet volatile demands, but this may not always be practicable.

With 15 nations accounting for 84% of the world-wide production, access to natural gas has become a significant fac- tor in international economics and politics. In this respect, control over the pipelines is a major strategic factor.

Gas storage is principally used to meet seasonal load variations. Gas is injected into storage during periods of low demand and

withdrawn from storage during periods of peak demand. It is also used for a variety of secondary purposes, including:

  • Balancing the flow in pipeline systems.

  • Maintaining contractual balance.

  • Leveling production over periods of fluctuating demand.

  • Market speculation.

  • Insuring against any unforeseen accidents. These may include natural factors such as hurricanes, or malfunction in production or distribution systems.

  • Meeting regulatory obligations.

  • Reducing price volatility. Offsetting changes in natural gas demands

The most important type of gas storage is in underground reservoirs. There are three principal types: depleted gas reser- voirs, aquifer reservoirs and salt cavern reservoirs. Each of these types possesses distinct physical and economic chara- cteristics which govern the suitability of a particular type of storage type for a given application.
