Reading: US bus cleaner retires aged 100

  1. Read the text below and give your title of the job.

A Los Angeles man who worked cleaning buses for the Metropolitan Transport Authority for 76 years, quits on his 100th birthday. Arthur Winston was only absent for one day during his working life - when his wife died in 1988. In 1996, Mr. Winston was honoured by former US President Bill Clinton as "Employee of the Century". In the same year, LA's transport authority renamed its South Bay bus depot the "Arthur Winston division".

Mr. Winston told the BBC the story of his life. He began working as a cotton picker at the age of 10 in Oklahoma. But several harvests were lost to droughts and storms and the family had to move to the west. In 1924 he started working in the railway industry.

In recent years, Mr. Winston led a team of 11 service attendants. Every day they washed many buses. He saw generations of co-workers come and go but he never felt he was missing a retirement. "I just kept on going. I prefer moving, working or doing something to staying at home," he said.

Mr. Winston has no definite plans for retirement but said he wants to keep busy - possibly working with senior citizens. He is also planning to travel to Tennessee to visit his 98-year-old brother.

Grammar: Verbs with two objects

  1. Read the rules below. Write to in the sentences 1-2, if necessary.

Direct object

Indirect object

The direct object usually refers to a thing and comes last.

They sent me a letter. (Indirect object – me, direct object – letter)

The indirect object usually refers to a person and comes first.

She made us some coffee. (Indirect object – us, direct object – coffee)

The indirect object can be put after the direct object. When the indirect object comes after the direct object, it usually takes the preposition to or for.

He sent some flowers to his mother. I gave my book to him.

When both objects are pronouns, it is common to put the indirect object last.

Send them to her. (NOT Send her some.) Give some to him. (Give him some.)

Many verbs can be followed by two objects – one and one .

Some common verbs which can be followed by two objects include: bring, buy, cost, get, give, leave, lend, make, offer, pass, pay, play, promise, read, refuse, send, show, sing, take, teach, wish, write
