Communication

Speaking: Role play

  1. In pairs practice the role play and give a performance for the whole class.

Student A: You are wearing something totally unsuitable for school. Try to give good reason for your choice to the teacher. You do not want to be sent home to change.

Student B: You are an angry teacher. Student A is wearing something totally unsuitable today. Ask him or her to go home and get changed. Explain your reasons.

  2. Work in groups of three students and role play the situation.

Family role play: Student C is 15 and has changed his/her look in one of the ways mentioned without their parents' permission.

Role cards:

Student A: you are Student C's father and you are angry that your son/daughter has changed their look. Find out exactly what they have done and why and tell them what you are going to do about it. Student B: you are Student C's mother and you think their change of look is quite attractive and shows that they care about their appearance. You think they should have told you but you want to defend your child in an argument with their father. Student C: you have changed your look and you know your dad is going to be angry. Try to tell him why you've done it and why you think you are old enough to make your own decisions.

  1. Try this questionnaire individually. Answer using the key to the following questions. (sa - strongly agree, a-agree, n-neutral, d-disagree, sd-strongly disagree)

  • Do you think all students should be allowed to choose between wearing a uniform and wearing their own clothes to school?

  • Do you think dress codes (or uniforms) are important at school?

  • Should teachers be required to wear school uniforms?

  • Is it important to have students wear school uniforms up until a certain age?

Choose two of the issues from the survey that really worry you. Why are you concerned about these issues? Do you feel neutrally about any of the issues? Why? Have a class discussion.
