Listening: Tongue twisters - the speech drills to help you develop clear and accurate diction.

  1. Listen to the following tongue twister, read and memorize it following the right pronunciation. Betty Botter

Betty Botter had some butter,

But”, she said ,”this butter’s bitter.

If I bake this bitter butter,

It would make my batter bitter.

But a bit of better butter-

that would make my batter better.

So she bought a bit of butter,

Better than her bitter butter,

and she baked it in her batter,

and the batter was not bitter.

So ‘twas better Betty Botter

(batter n a mixture of flour, eggs, and milk, beaten together and used in cooking)

  1. What do you know about buttons? Why do men and women button their clothes differently?

  2. Do you know any idioms with “button”?

e.g. button your lip

Renee talked about her vacation so much that we finally told her to button her lip”.

Meaning: to stop talking; be quiet

Origin: It’s easy to picture where this 20th-century American expression came from. Imagine buttons on people’s lips. Someone who wanted you to stay quiet, keep a secret, and not say a word would tell you to button your lip. Today some people also use the expressions “button it up”, “zipper your mouth”, and “put a cork on it.”
