  1. What do you think? Ask and answer these questions with another student:

• Where do you want to live – in a lighthouse or on a narrowboat?

• What are the main differences between the two homes?

• What kind of person may want to live in these homes?

• What kind of person may want to live in a usual home?

• How will your friends and family react if you start to live in a very different kind of home?

  1. Look at the picture of a house. Who do you think lives there? Would you want to live there? Why/why not?

  1. What is important for you in a home? Work in pairs. Put these in order of importance for you:

  • the size – number of bedrooms etc

  • an outdoor area – balcony, terrace or garden

  • nice views

  • friendly neighbours

  • security

  • convenient location – near shops or transport

  • privacy

  1. Read the conversation questions on houses and architecture.

Choose a question and make a one minute speech in front of the class. Evaluate each others’ speeches.

a. Do you think that old buildings are more beautiful than new ones? Why or why not?

b. What's your favorite room in the house? Why?

c. Describe a well-known building in your hometown.

d. Tell about the last time you visited a famous building or monument. What was it? How did it look?

e. How important are monuments (like Big Ben or the Statue of Liberty) for the nation?

f. When was the house/apartment you now live in built? How do you think it has changed since then?

g. Describe your dream house.

h. Describe a building you dislike. Why don't you like it?

i. Describe your house or apartment. How many rooms does it have? How many bathrooms? Who lives there?

j. What was the last improvement you made to your house or apartment? Tell about it.

k. Would you prefer to own a single family house or an apartment? Why?

l. What city's architecture has impressed you the most?

  1. Get into two groups to talk about home safety. Share opinions on the following ideas. How effective are they?

~not opening door to strangers unless a parent is around

~keeping doors locked

~fire safety: fire escape plan

Burglary is always a worry for home owners. What kinds of things can we do to make houses safer?

How important is safety? How do you make a house safe?

Independent assignment

  1. Write a story titled "Living in an Igloo" (substitute other buildings).

  2. Write your opinion on one of the questions:

What do you like about your house? What don’t you like about your house?

  1. Imagine that you are tired of living in a house. Where will you live?

  2. What is your favorite part of your house?  What do you like to do there?

  3. Draw/describe your dream house (money is not a problem) where, materials, design, interior, landscaping etc

  4. Make a poster about the world’s millionaires. How did they get their wealth? What do they do with their riches? Share your work to your classmates.

  5. You are a billionaire. Write about one day in your life. Read your writing to your class.

Household chores are tasks we do around the house to keep it clean. Some chores you do every day. Others you do several times a week or just once a week.
