Grammar: Present Perfect Tense

  1. Read the following rules about the use of Present Perfect. Then match one of the sentences below to each rule.

We use the present perfect for a complete action. We are thinking of the result when we describe:

  1. An action or situation that started in the past and continues in the present.

  2. An action performed during a period that has not yet finished.

  3. A repeated action between the past and now.

  4. An action that was completed in the very recent past. (expressed by “just”)

  5. An action when the result is very important but the time is not.

  1. We have finished the report.

  2. I have lived in Almaty since 1986.

  3. I have just seen Tom in the street.

  4. She has read only 3 chapters of the book.

  1. Now do the following exercises with a partner to practice the Present Perfect.

    1. Think of 3 actions you have started but haven’t finished yet. Tell your partner reasons why you cannot finish them on time.

Example: I have started reading “The Lord of the rings” but I haven’t finished yet because I have to prepare for my exams.

    1. Make up 3 sentences with common present perfect time expressions: for (with a period of time), since (with an exact point in time), ever, never, yet, already, this week (month, year).

Example: I haven’t seen Mark for ages.

  1. Read the poem below and tell the class what the author compares the family with.
