Герундий как член предложения.

В предложении герундий может являться следующими членами предложения:

1. Подлежащее

Reading a good book is a pleasure.

Чтение хорошей книги- удовольствие.

2. Часть составного именного глагольного сказуемого

I began reading this book yesterday.

Я начал читать эту книгу вчера.

3. Часть составного именного сказуемого

My task is reading this book.

Мое задание- прочитать эту книгу.

4. Дополнение

I like reading good books.

Мне нравиться читать хорошие книги.

5. Определение

We like his idea of reading this book together.

Нам понравилось его идея прочитать эту книгу вместе.

6. Обстоятельство

On reading this book I gave it to Mike.

Прочитав книгу, я отдал ее Майку.

Герундий употребляется, как правило, после глаголов, существительных, прилагательных, за которыми следует предлог, а также после глаголов, выражающих начало, длительность, конец действия (to begin, to start, to continue, to go on, to stop, etc.), и глаголов, выражающих предпочтение и неприязнь к чему-либо (to like, to enjoy, to love, to hate, to dislike, etc.)

1. Translate into your native language, be attentively with Gerund:

1. Have you finished writing? 2. Taking a cold shower in the morning is very useful. 3. I like skiing, but my sister prefers skating. 4. She likes sitting in the sun. 5. It looks like raining. 6. My watch wants repairing. 7. Thank you for coming. 8. I had no hope of getting an answer before the end of the month. 9. I had the pleasure of dancing with her the whole evening. 10. Let’s go boating.

2. Complete these sentences, putting the verbs into the gerund and using one of the following prepositions. Some of them are used more than once:

about, of, in, to, after, by, for, on, at, without

e.g.: We walked about going (go) to France for our holiday.

1. I look forward …(see) you again holiday. 2. She’s tired … (work) for the company. 3. I’m very happy … my parents… (come) home. 4. … (open) the front door, I walked slowly through it. 5. He’s very ken … (swim) at the moment. 10. I’m worried … Jane … (get) to the airport on time.

1. They accuse him of having robbed the house. 2. He never agreed to their going on that dangerous voyage. 3. He did not approve of her drinking so much coffee. 4. The teacher of mathematics did not approve of his pupils dreaming. 5. All the happiness of my life depends on your loving me. 6. I don’t feel like seeing him. 7. I insist on being told the truth. 8. I object to his borrowing money from you. 9. I stretched out my hand to prevent her from falling. 10. My friend succeeded him of deceiving her.
