Seminar 1 Translation of Texts Belonging to Different Styles

Aim: to define features of translation for specific purposes.

Questions for discussion:

• To compare General Language (GL) and Language for Specific Purposes (LSP);

• To talk on the evolvement of LSP;

• To define what translation for specific purposes is.

Aim: to consider pragmatic approach in STn

Questions for discussion:

• To define the essence of the pragmatic approach in STn;

• To consider translational techniques used to preserve ST’s pragmatics in TT

• To talk on types of STn;

• To define terms and terminological systems, their peculiarities.

Aim: to consider key features of texts belonging to publisictic style: oratory, TV/radio comments, advertisements, feature articles.

Questions for discussion:

• What publicistic style is;

• To define main peculiarities of texts belonging to publicistic style, point out differences between them;

• Differences and similarities in Russian and English Publicistic Style;

• Ways and methods to translate texts belonging to publicistic style.

• To analyze oratorical speeches - The Speech that Made Obama President (analysis of peculiarities of pre-election speech); ‘How will the Dream Live On’ by Oprah Winfrey

• To translate first Inaugural Speech of Barack Obama (written form)

• To translate advertisement slogans from English into Russian (written form)
