IV.

Pupils On the 8th of March!

2. Teacher: You’re quite right. And now let us revise the poem, which is called "The 8th of March"

Pupils:( all together)

My dear Mother (Granny, sister, teacher)

I love you very much.

I congratulate you on the 8th March.

With loving kisses I want to say

I wish you a happy Women's Day.

You are such a nice friend (teacher, granny, sister etc.).

It is easy to see

Why everyone likes you

Especially me.

3. Teacher: Today we are going to learn some more poems. They are about spring and Mother's Day, too.

The first one is "Questions in March"

Questions in March

How soon will the streams1 softly2flow?

I don't know.

When will the first daffodils gently blow3?

I don't know.

When do the roaring4 winds suddenly go?

I don't know.

Why do the grasses quietly grow?

I don't know.

But streams will flow,

Daffodils blow,

Winds go, grasses grow

Whatever 5 I say or know.

1. ручьи

2. спокойно, мягко

3. нарциссы нежно расцветают

4. порывистый

5. что бы ни

But first let us train the pronunciation of some new words, such as: streams

Softly flow

Daffodils

Gently blow

Whatever

(The pupils read the poem in chorus after the teacher and individually).

Teacher: Task 1. How can you answer these questions?

Task 2. Learn the poem by heart for the next lesson and be ready to choose the best speaker. What would you give him/her as a prize?

4. Teacher: As far as I know you have prepared very nice poems for your mothers to congratulate them on Women's day. Let us listen to them.

(Children start reciting the poems)

1. Flowers for Mother

Clara Rader

I never have a special day

To give flowers to my mother;

I give them to her every day

To show how much I love her.

When I sweep the kitchen floor,

Or care for baby brother,

Run on errands, or make the beds,

I'm giving flowers to Mother.

It's lots of fun pretending

And to hear my mother say,

“Thank you, dear, for all the flowers

You've given me today.”

2. More Sacred than All Others

G.Cooper

The noblest thoughts we can claim,

The noblest words we can frame,

Unworthy is to praise the name,

More sacred than all other-

The blessed name of "Mother"

3. Only One Mother.

G. Cooper

Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky;

Hundreds of shells on the shore together;

Hundreds of birds that go singing by;

Hundreds of bees in the sunny weather.

Hundreds of lambs in the purple clover;

Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn,

But only one mother the wide world over.

5.The pupils sing the song

" My mother's day Basket"

(Words and music by Clyde Strathmoore)

Admits the thorns upon a vine,

A delicate rose was there entwined.

I saw this rose and swiftly knew

T’was just the one to give to you.

I gathered leaves and flowers too,

Then made this basket just for you.

For each bright flower’s here to say

My wish for you Happy Mother's Day.

"Mothering Day (Sunday)”, look at the new words, study them and do the tasks below. Be ready to work in pairs.

Mothering Day (Sunday)

In the middle of March there is Mid-Lent Sunday1 оr Mothering Sunday. It is claimed that the name Mothering Sunday came from the ancient custom of visiting the "mother church" at this time. It was the day, when servants and apprentices2 were given a holiday in order that they might visit their homes. Although Sundays were strictly observed in the old days they were by no means holidays for domestic servants. But to schoolchildren it always meant a holiday, when they went home to spend the day with their parents. It was customary for young people to carry small gifts with them to their Mothers, bunches of flowers and a special kind of cake being the usual

offerings. It was a pleasant custom and it is being revived3 today in a

modified (changed) form.

The cakes which the young people of the past carried with them when they

went to visit their parents were known as Simnel cakes. The word " Simnel "

is derived from a Latin word meaning fine bread. Simnel cakes were bought

and baked in Mid-Lent throughout the Middle Ages, and it is still possible to

buy them today.

Mothering Sunday is not the same as Mother's Day. The latter is an American

festival celebrated on the second Sunday in May as an occasion for each person to remember his mother by some act of grateful affection = (love).
