11Th Form Speaking Prompts:

~Choose one of the following prompts to speak about for 3—5 minutes.

  1. Alexander the Great said “I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.” Think about your relationship with your teachers.

    • Identify the most important teacher in your life and explain the characteristics which made this person an excellent teacher.

    • Use examples to illustrate a time when a teacher challenged you and positively impacted your growth.

    • Predict how your life may be different had this teacher not been a part of your life.

  1. Celebrities often live rather rich, glamorous lives. On the other hand, they often have to give up certain freedoms, such as privacy.

  • Which is most important—fame or privacy?

  • Would you be a celebrity if you had the opportunity? If so, what kind?

  • What struggles might you have and how would you resolve them?

  • In what ways could you use your celebrity status to help the community? Summarize some possible methods.

  1. Many nations, cultures and religions have predicted how and when the world will end. Despite various “deadlines” for the end of the world come and go without serious consequence, people continue to seriously consider each new potential apocalypse, such as the most recent Mayan 2012 predicted apocalypse, for example.

  • Tell about the ways some people have thought the world would end and the ways in which people respond to these theories.

  • Infer why you think myths and theories about the end of the world are so fascinating to so many people worldwide.

  • How and when do you think the world will end?

11Th Form Writing Prompts:

~Choose one of the following and write a composition.

  1. Some people believe that different vocations are more important than others within a society; for example, an engineer or a doctor is more important than a journalist or a lawyer.

  • Evaluate the importance of different vocations within a society, such as those requiring a humanities or liberal arts education and those requiring education in the fields of science and technology. Do you believe some are more important than others; use examples to defend your position.

  • Identify and describe criteria for what determines the importance of a profession.

  • Is it necessary to have so many different professions in the world? Explain.

  1. According to Bill Gates, “Leaders will be those who empower others” and in life, we come across many different types of leaders in different parts of our lives.

  • Choose a person whom you believe to be a great leader and describe the qualities he or she has that characterize him/her as a leader?

  • In your opinion, are these qualities unique or do all great leaders possess them?

  • How have leaders influenced your own life? Or how have you influenced others as a leader? Provide examples.

  1. Some people believe universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country. Do you think that all university students should study in a foreign county for one semester?

  • What are the benefits of studying in a foreign country?

  • If you had to study abroad for one semester in a foreign country, which country would you want to study in? Why?

  • Infer some of the benefits and disadvantages of overseas study, in this country specifically.
