Существует ряд глаголов и словосочетаний, после которых возможно употребление как герундия, так и инфинитива, но смысл предложений может отличаться. Например:

He stopped smoking. Он бросил курить.

He stopped to smoke. Он остановился, чтобы закурить.

I remember posting your letter. Я помню, как отправлял твое письмо.

I remembered to post the letter. Я не забыл отправить письмо.

Но в некоторых случаях значение предложений остается неизменным. Например, после глаголов:

like – нравиться continue – продолжать

hate - ненавидеть, не хотеть intend – намереваться планировать

start - начинать learn – учиться

regret - сожалеть propose – предлагать

forget – забывать

и выражений:

it is worth while – стоит делать что-либо

it is no use/it is useless/it is no good – не стоит, не имеет смысла.
