(THE ARTICLE)

В англійській мові перед іменниками вживається особливе службове слово — артикль: означений the і неозначений a (an).

Неозначений артикль (The Indefinite Article)

1. Форма неозначеного артикля а уживається перед іменниками, що

починаються з приголосного звука, а форма an — перед іменниками,

що починаються з голосного.

a	an
a book, a map, a shop	an apple, an engineer, an arm
a university	an umbrella

2. Зазвичай артикль ставиться перед іменниками, але якщо іменник має одне або кілька означень, то артикль ставиться перед ними:

a toy, a good tсoy, a good new toy.

3. Неозначений артикль походить від числівника one, тому він уживається, як правило, із обчислюваними іменниками в однині.

4. Неозначений артикль уживається:

а) коли називають будь-який предмет з усього класу однорідних:

Take a book. Візьміть, будь ласка, книгу. (будь-яку книгу, не конкретну)

б) коли йдеться про особу або предмет, що належить до певного класу (подібних осіб, предметів):

Мy father is a worker.

в) з іменниками, які означають одиниці вимірювання часу, ваги, відстані:

The car made 40 kilometres an hour.

г) зі словами dozen, hundred, thousand, million:

He saw a dozen films.

д) зі словами few, little, коли мається на увазі «небагато»:

We had a few books.

Уживання артикля з власними назвами

З означеним артиклем вживаються:

а) назви країн, що складаються із загальної назви та означального слова, що стоїть перед нею:

the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland;

б) назви морів, океанів, річок, пустель, груп островів та гірських хребтів:

the Atlantic Ocean, the Black Sea, the Dnipro, the Desna, the Alps, the Carpathian Mountains, the Sahara, the Cook Islands.

Але: Lake Ontario, Mount Snowdon;

в) назви газет і журналів:

The Guardian, the Times;

г) назви готелів:

the Metropol, the Savoy.

Артикль не вживається перед:

а) прізвищами та іменами людей, а також кличками тварин:

Petrenko, Mykola, Victor, Mukhtar, Pussy, Murka.

Але: якщо перед прізвищем у множині стоїть означений артикль, це означає, що йдеться про всіх членів сім’ї:

the Browns — Брауни;

б) назвами континентів, країн, міст, сіл:

Europe, Ukraine, Poland, Kharkiv.

Винятки: the Netherlands, the Philippines;

в) назвами вулиць:

Baker Street.

Але: the High Street.

Використання артикля у деяких усталених сполученнях

a/an	a lot of, a great deal of, a great number of — багато
	a few — небагато (обчислюв.)
	a little — небагато (необчисл.)
	all of a sudden — раптом
	as a matter of fact — фактично, насправді
	as a result of — в результаті
	at a speed of — зі швидкістю
	for a short (long) time — недовго (довго)
	in a loud (low) voice — голосно (тихо)
	it is a pity — на жаль
	to be in a hurry — поспішати
	to have a good time — гарно провести час
	to have a cold — застудитися
	to go for a walk — піти на прогулянку
	to take a seat — сісти
the	in the morning — вранці
	in the afternoon — удень
	in the evening — увечері
	in the country — за містом
	on the one (other) hand — з одного (іншого) боку
	on the whole — в цілому
	the day before yesterday — позавчора
	the day after tomorrow — післязавтра
	the other day — на днях
	to go to the theatre (the cinema) — ходити у театр (кино)
	to play the piano — грати на піаніно
	to tell the truth — говорити правду
	What is the time? — Котра година?

Exercise 1.Explain the use of the articles in the given pass of sentences.

1. a) Give me a book. b) Give me the book. 2. a) This is a house. b) This is the house. 3. a) You can have a new bag. b) You can have the new bag. 4. a) A box has six sides, b) The box has six sides. 5. a) May I have an English book? b) May I have the English book? 6. a) This is a famous picture, b) This is the famous picture. 7. a) You had a copy of my report, b) You had the copy of my report. 8. a) She is a doctor, b) She is the doctor.

Exercise 2. Study the use of the article in the following pairs of sentences. Translate them into Russian.

1. a) There will be a cinema across the street, b) The cinema will be across the street. 2. a) There is a newspaper in my bag. b) The newspaper is in my bag. 3 a) There was a dictionary on the shelf, b) The dictionary was on the shelf. 4. a) There is a Post Office on the other side of the square, b) The Post Office is on the other side of the square.

Exercise 3. Form sentences with the given phrases according to the model. Translate the sentences into Russian. Practise "what?" and "where?" questions.

Model: table - near the window. There is a table near the window.

The table is near the window.

1. school - in our street. 2. lake - in the park. 3. trees - on both sides of the alley. 4. people - in the hall. 5. garden -in front of the house. 6. bank - in the central square.

Exercise 4. Fill in the blanks with articles according to the model.

Model: This is a new airplane. The airplane is by designer Ivanov. It's a very comfortable airplane.

1. Andorra is... country. It's... small country. ...country is situated between France and Spain. 2. "Is mere ... theatre in your town?" "Yes, we have there one. ... theatre is in the town's central square." 3. There is ... mistake in this sentence. ... mistake is bad. It's ... grammar, not ... spelling mistake. 4. This is... difficult sentence. ... sentence has a new construction in it. It's ... sentence with... Passive construction. 5. "Roman Holidays" is ... nice film. It's ... film with Audrey Hepbum. Go and see ... film. 6. Ours is ... noisy street. It's... street with heavy traffic. ... street is in the centre of the city.

Exercise 5. Fill in the missing articles:

This is ... picture of my sitting-room. Look at it. There is ... large window in my sitting-room. ... floor is brown, ... walls are yellow. There is ... sofa, ... side-board opposite ... door. There are not any English books in ... bookcase but there are ... lot of ... Russian books in it. There is ... carpet on "… floor, ... two armchairs with ... small table between them on ... left. ...
