Он больше не приедет в Лондон
Вождь одного из африканских племен впервые приехал в Лондон, когда ему было уже за шестьдесят. Он провел ночь в гостинице, а утром пошел побродить по городу.
Очутившись случайно у железнодорожного вокзала, он остановился у железной калитки, чтобы посмотреть, как прибывает поезд. Это был пригородный поезд, рассчитанный на удобное время, чтобы клерки из Сити вовремя успели к месту работы.
Поезд все еще двигался, когда большое число возбужденных молодых людей со свирепыми лицами молча помчались, выставив зонты, подобно пикам, прямо на него. Казалось, они охотились за ним.
«Дикари, - подумал гость из Африки. - Сейчас произойдет что-то ужасное» - и он пустился наутек.
В такси он почувствовал себя в относительной безопасности. В своем номере он заперся на ключ и решил ни под каким видом никому не открывать двери и выйти только с наступлением темноты.
Вернувшись к себе на родину, он рассказывал друзьям об этом инциденте, прибавляя: «Какая удача, что они потеряли меня!»
Кто главное действующее лицо этого рассказа, африканский вождь или множество лондонских клерков, которые с таким устрашающим видом торопились на службу?
Что привлекло внимание приезжего на вокзале?
Что несли в руках пассажиры, которые выбежали из поезда? Чем показались зонтики пожилому африканскому вождю? Чего он испугался?
Можно ли верить рассказам о «сенсационных» приключениях некоторых путешественников?
The lion's point of view
A man and a lion once had a dispute as to which belonged to the nobler race. The man pointed to an ancient monument on which was sculptured a triumphant hunter standing over a vanquished lion.
"That doesn't settle the question, - said the lion, - for if a lion had been the sculptor he would have represented the lion as standing over the vanquished hunter".
С точки зрения льва
Человек и лев однажды заспорили о том, кто из них принадлежит к более благородному племени.
Человек показал на старинный памятник, изображавший торжествующего охотника, который стоял над побежденным львом.

Лев, конечно, прав, но где вы видели скульптора-льва?
Не missed his dinner but enjoyed his supper
Supper was already over when a guest unexpectedly arrived.
- Would you care for spine macaroni and a piece of an apple pie? - mother asked.
- Thanks, it comes just at the right moment, I missed my dinner being on the way and am rather hungry, - the guest answered.
Mother put another plate on the table for him and brought a dish of nicely browned macaroni from the kitchen.
- Keep our friend company, Jackie, while I heat the apple pie and coffee, - she said.
Jackie ran out of the room for a minute and returned with a neatly cut piece of cheese on a plate.
- There's a good boy, - the guest said having finished the macaroni and the cheese. - A clever boy always knows what may be found in the frig.
- That didn't come from the frig, - Jackie answered triumphantly, - it came from the mouse trap.
