IV. Grammar Exercises
Cardinal numerals answer the question “how many?” - Simple numerals from 1to 12 as well as 100, 1,000, 1,000,000 are fixed words. The numerals hundred, thousand, million, billion are usually written in singular (two hundred years); the plural is only used if they are not modified by another number or expression and are followed by a noun with the preposition of (hundreds of years). - Derived numerals. Numerals from 13 to 19 are derived from corresponding simple ones by adding the suffix -teen (some stems are modified – thirteen, fifteen, eighteen). The numerals that are multiples of 10 are formed by addition of the suffix -ty to the number of tens, with occasional modifications (twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, eighty). - Composite numerals are formed by putting the first two described types together in order from left to right (tens and units are written with a hyphen). Hundreds and tens are separated using the word -and (one hundred and twenty-five; five hundred and seventy-two). |
