Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives

We use –er, -est for:

- short words (one syllable):

cheap-cheaper-the cheapest, small-smaller-the smallest

- two-syllable words ending in -y, -er,

-le, -ow:

easy-easier-the easiest , narrow-narrower-the narrowest

- two-syllable words having the stress on the second syllable:

polite-politer-the politest

We use more, the most for:

- longer words (two syllables or more):

modern- more modern –the most modern, serious –more serious-the most serious, comfortable – more comfortable-the most comfortable

Spelling rules: hot –hotter – the hottest

nice – nicer – the nicest

happy – happierthe happiest

You will have to learn these by heart:

  • good – better – the best

  • bad – worse – the worst

  • little – less – the least

  • far – farther (further) – the farthest (furthest)

  • old – older (elder) – the oldest (eldest)

1. Give the comparative and superlative degrees of the following adjectives.

sad, bad, old, happy, free, far, dry, big, shy, little, polite, famous, heavy, small, long, fat, pretty, noisy, good, intelligent, interesting, pleasant, delicious

2. Use the adjectives in brackets either in the comparative or the superlative degrees.

1. This ambulance is furnished (good) ____________________________than others.

4. My nephew works in a hospital which is (modern) __________________than ours.

5. This is one of the (small) ________________________________windows in this ward.

6. Mary is (responsible) ________________________________nurse in the hospital.

3. Translate into English.

1. Моя сестра працює медсестрою у великій лікарні, але моя мама працює у ще більшій.

2. Ці носилки важкі, але оті, що в кутку – ще важчі.

3. Праця медсестри є такою ж важливою як і праця лікаря.

4. Стан пацієнта став набагато важчим, аніж очікували.

5. Через біль у горлі я почуваю себе гірше аніж учора.

6. У нас дуже мало часу на цю вправу, але на екзамені ми матимемо його ще менше.
