Structural patterns Articles with geographic names

No Article

The Definite Article

Names of continents

Europe, Asia, America

NOTE: No article is used when they are modified by such attributes as: northern, southern, western, eastern, central, minor etc

North America, Central Africa

Exception: the Arctic, The Antarctic (meaning the sea and the land round the North and South Poles)

Names of countries, states, provinces, cities towns and villages

France, Great Britain

Moscow, Rome, Delhi

NOTE: No article is used when they are modified by such attributes as: northern, southern, western, eastern, central, old, new etc

Old England, Ancient Greece, Southern France

Exception:

Countries: the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the Argentine (but Argentina)

Provinces: the Crimea, the Caucasus, the Riviera

Cities: the Hague

Exception: when names of lakes are preceded by the noun lake, no article is used

Lake Baikal, Lake Ontario

Names of oceans, seas, straits, channels, canals, rivers, lakes

The Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic

The Mediterranean, the Black Sea

The Bering Strait, the English Channel
