Prepositions (time)

IN

  • expressing a period of time during which an event happens (years, months, seasons, parts of the day)

They met in 1885.

They went away in January

They go on holidays in summer.

He gets up in the morning.

NOTE: if the nouns denoting a part of the day have attributes they are used with the preposition on:

on a fine summer morning

on the morning of the 1st of July

The parts of yesterday, today and tomorrow are used without an article.

Yesterday morning I got up very early

This morning I have English classes

Tomorrow afternoon I will be in Greece

  • expressing the length of time before a future event is expected to happen

I'll see you in fifteen minutes

ON

  • indicating the exact day of the month

The news were reported on September 26

  • indicating the days of the week

We will start off on Sunday

  • parts of a day during which an event takes place if they are used with attributes

I remember it happened on a very hot evening in July

  • indicating some special days

What will you give me on my birthday?

  • with the word ‘holiday’

She is away on holiday

AT

  • expressing exact time when an event takes place or a particular period of a day

He called me at midnight.

The crime was committed at 4.00 pm.

The sea is cooler at night.

  • pointing at holiday periods

There are big sales in London at Christmas

  • with nouns meaning meals

He read a newspaper at breakfast

  • with the word ‘weekend’

We went to the seaside at weekend

NOTE: In informal speech we do not use any preposition with such words as last, next, this, that, each, every, one, some, all

I got up early that morning.

We worked all night.

Exercise 35. Translate the following sentences.

  1. Однажды прекрасным, ясным утром Красная Шапочка отправилась к своей бабушке.

  2. Они познакомились в 1984 году. Это было в январе. Я точно помню. Было холодно и противно, но Джейн позвонила мне такая радостная, чтобы поделиться новостью. Она сообщила, что на уикенде познакомилась со своим будущим мужем.
