Verbs and expressions followed by the Gerund
In English there are some verbs and set phrases that are followed by the gerund.
avoid forgive (for doing) enjoy imagine keep mind prevent (from doing) risk |

Exercise 20. Paraphrase the sentences using the gerund.
He imagined that he was taking the money.
Would you mind that they sell your flat?
He avoids that he talks on the phone.
I enjoy when I teach.
He complained and complained again and again.
Do you mind if I smoke?
I can’t stand when he smokes.
It’s no use when you cry over split milk.
Is it worth to buy it?
I can’t imagine that he will help her in washing.
He will never forgive her that she lied to him.

Exercise 21. Open the brackets using a suitable form of the gerund.

Pronoun or determiner ‘other’
Other means ‘additional or extra’, or ‘alternative’, or ‘different types of’.

We can use another as a pronoun: The applications are examined by one committee, then passed on to another. We can use another as a pronoun with time or distance denoting additional: He drove another 10 miles before we found a gas station. |
the other |
The other with a singular noun means the second of two things or people, or the opposite of a set of two: This computer here is new. The other computer is about five years old. |
We can use the other as a pronoun, especially to refer back to something which has been mentioned already in the sentence: He had his hat in one hand and a bunch of flowers in the other. |
