II. Reading Comprehension:

    1. Read and translate the text:

Aggregate

Aggregates are stone-like granular materials such as gravel and sand. They form the consistent of the concrete, their quantity usually amounting to four times that of cement. The high volume stability of concrete is brought about by the addition of the aggregate. Aggregate must be clean. Loam, dirt, dust-like sand and similar substances impair the quality of concrete.

We distinguish between natural aggregate and crushed aggregate according to the way of winning them. Moreover, we distinguish between heavy and light-weight aggregate. Light-weight aggregates are only used if the concrete is to show thermal insulating properties.

Gravel and sand are natural aggregates, the grains are round and smooth. Natural aggregate is obtained from deposits and won by digging in pits and river-beds. Crushed aggregate includes crushed coarse aggregate and crushed fine aggregate. They have an angular grain shape. Crushed coarse aggregate and crushed fine aggregate are, obtained by the reduction to smaller pieces (crushing and grinding) of stones.

Grain size and granulometric gradation are decisive for the strength and the amount of cement required for the fabrication of concrete.

Aggregate should be stored on clean and solid ground. If aggregate should be added in specified doses according to the kind and grain size during the mixing process in order to obtain high strengths, a storing of the different kinds of aggregate in separate compartments (according to type and grain size) is necessary.

    1. Answer the following questions:

1. What material is the constituent of the concrete? 2. What impairs the quality of concrete? 3. How do we distinguish the kinds of aggregate? 4. Where is the natural aggregate obtained from? 5. How is the crushed aggregate obtained? 6. What is decisive for the strength of concrete? 7. How should aggregate be stored?

III. Comprehension and Word Study.

1. Find the following word combinations in the text, read and translate the sentences with them:

Stone-like materials; high volume stability; to impair the quality; the way of winning; to be obtained by reduction; to be decisive; mixing process.

2. Make up a dialogue using the following sentences as answers to your questions:

1. Aggregates are stone-like materials such as gravel and sand. 2. Aggregate must be clean. Loam, dirt and dustlike sand impair the quality of concrete. 3. We distinguish, between natural aggregate and crushed aggregate according to the way of winning. 4. Gravel and sand are natural aggregates, the grains are smooth round. 5. Crushed coarse and crushed fine aggregates are obtained by reduction to smaller pieces of stones.
