Thermal space cooling and heating
Solar thermal space cooling systems are types of thermally activated cooling systems (TACS). There are two types of solar systems: solar absorption systems and solar desiccant systems. Absorption systems absorb solar heat in order to separate and evaporate a refrigerant fluid. Desiccant systems use solar thermal heat to regenerate desiccants, which suck the humidity out of the air, creating cooler dry air.
Solar space cooling systems are expensive and complicated to install. Their great advantages are reduced energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, for the most part, the disadvantages of high up-front costs and maintenance continue to keep space cooling out of the mainstream – especially at the single home level.
Nevertheless, solar space heating is still a young and emerging technology that shows promise. It is especially promising in hot, sun-filled climates such as the Middle East, some parts of Europe, and the Southwestern United States.
The sun is our most powerful heater. Every day it brightens and warms our Earth - it is the very lifeblood of every species on the planet. Solar thermal space heating can be incorporated through either intelligent building design, modern solar thermal technology or, better yet, both.
There are several ways to regulate home temperature through solar heating.
Passively - south-facing windows and thermal masses within can help heat the home on northern winter days when the sun is low in the southern sky.
Actively - there are two main types of solar thermal space heating systems: liquid and air-based.
This section of CalFinder's Solar Library will explore in-depth the existing applications for solar thermal space heating. You'll find info about system types, processes, components, maintenance, financing and incentives for each system. Following a brush-up on the details, CalFinder Solar can then connect you with pre-screened local solar installers for free estimates and more personal assistance.
