Does Tim perform the functions of a manager?

2) Mary Carren is an associate administrator at a local hospital. Mary spends approximately 20 percent of her day working with the administrator, 40 percent handling administrative paperwork, and 40 percent meeting with department heads to discuss operational problems and ways of dealing with them. Except for the occasional times when she attends national professional meeting on training programs, Mary’s time is spent at the hospital.

Is Mary a manager?

Compare your answers with the following point of view. Agree or disagree, give your reasons.

    1. Yes, but not all of the time. He spends some of the week getting things done through others and the rest of the time doing things himself. In fact, unless it is company policy, he should not be out selling. He should be in the office handling administrative work or helping the salespeople sell.

    2. Indeed, yes. She spends a great deal of her time getting thing done through other people. In fact, assuming that both she and Tim are doing their jobs properly, Mary has the greater need for management expertise because her job is more managerial in nature.
