Definition of Management

Management is considered to be a universal consideration. Almost every problem faced by organizations or nations can be at least partially solved through effective and efficient management practices. Firms in the private sector continually strive to increase their managerial efficiency and effectiveness, as do organizations in the public sector.

Management has been defined in many different ways. We shall use the following definition: management is the process of setting objectives and coordinating the efforts of personnel in order to attain them. Note that by its very definition, management involves getting things done through other people. The manager must be a planner, communicator, coordinator, leader, and controller; and most of all the manager must be a facilitator. He or she must smooth the way for subordinate performance.

It should be pointed out that not every person who carries the title of manager actually is a manager. Some "managers" have so little authority — for example, managers who have to check everything with the boss — that they are little more than managerial assistants. Others really do not want to manage. Preferring to let subordinates be in control, they delegate virtually all of the authority to lower-level people who, then, are responsible for seeing that things get done. Still others who are called managers only manage some of the time.
