Employment trends for computer programmers
As part of the large computer and data processing industry, the number of jobs in data processing firms, software houses, and computer consulting businesses are numerous. Due to new technologies, programmers will be needed to update new languages in outdated systems.
The demand for programmers will be fuelled by continued expansion of electronic data processing in business, telecommunications, scientific research, utilities, government, and by the increasing sophistication and complexity of computers. More firms are realizing that the size and cost of computers have dropped, but the capacity for data storage and processing is greater than ever. The need for computer systems engineers should increase as companies attempt to maximize the efficiency of their computer systems. Inexpensive computer hardware and software also will induce more small businesses to computerize their operations.
The demand for systems analysts is expected to rise as advances in technology lead to new applications for computers. Factory and office automation, advances in telecommunications technology, and scientific research are just a few areas where use of computer systems will expand. As a consequence, there will be several differing effects on the employment demand of systems analysts. Often, job openings are filled by experienced programmers moving up the promotional ladder in the same firm. College graduates, who have had courses in computer programming, systems analysis, and other data processing areas, as well as training or experience in an applied field, enjoy the best prospects for employment. Increased use of the Internet by corporations will create thousands of new jobs, and absolutely no one is in a position to predict when the anticipated employment boom will peak or how it will be characterized. One certainty will be the ever-increasing demand by employers for Web Page Designers and Web Masters/Mistresses to be more technically proficient in computer graphics and its application in marketing.
