The British Museum

The British Museum comprising the national museum of archeology and ethnography and the national library is the richest and the largest of its kind in the world. It was founded in 1753. The Reading room of the Museum is open to ticket holders. The huge circular hall, accommodating about 450 readers is covered by a dome 106 ft high and with the diameter of 140 ft. The ground floor shelves around the Room hold a large selection of reference books (dictionaries, history and etc.) which may be consulted directly by the readers. The most important of the national museums are geographically West End, with the exception of the British Museum which is in Bloomsbury. The National Gallery which contains one of the most important collections of pictures ever to have been assembled in Great Britain is on the North side of Trafalgar square.

London parks and open spaces

There are a great number of parks in London: Hyde Park, Green Park, St. James Park, Kensington Gardens and others. Kensington Gardens is really a very pretty place and a happy hunting-ground for children. In the north-western district of London, there’s another large park, Regent’s Park which is chiefly noted for the fact that it contains the zoological garden. It has a very fine collection of animals and a wonderful aquarium. There is a lot of smaller parks and gardens all over London.

The surroundings of London are very attractive. In the south are the well-wooded hills of Surrey and Kent, which give splendid views over the surrounding country-side; in the south-west there is Thames Valley; in the west are some hills and valleys and also Windsor Castle, the royal residence. Richmond is one of the most attractive places near London; with a fine park it is delightfully situated on the slope of a hill overlooking the Thames. Kew Gardens where there’s the world famous Botanical Gardens is there too. To the east of London there’s a large stretch of woodland called Epping Forest; this has been left in its natural state and in summer it’s delightful to wander under shady trees far away from the noise of great city which is so near, and yet seems so far away.
