Working as a manager in a firm offers you advantages and
disadvantages. Knowing the job requirements of managers can help
you determine if a career in management is something you wish to
pursue.
Advantages:
Higher Salary
One of the advantages of becoming a manager is that most managers make more money than regular employees in a firm. Many companies pay managers a salary instead of hourly wages. The advantages of receiving salary pay is managers are guaranteed to earn a certain amount every pay period. This allows managers to easily budget their finances because they know the exact amount of money coming. Managers typically receive generous employer-sponsored benefits , such as vacation time, health benefits and profit-sharing plans. The higher salaries and benefits received by managers help maintain high employee morale.
Authority
Managers enjoy a certain amount of authority within a firm. The authority allows managers to contribute ideas to the company and take part in the decision-making process. Managers also possess a certain level of authority over employees within their department. They can use this authority to benefit themselves and their staff by motivating and training employees. When managers use their authority in the right way, they benefit from the achievements attained by their teams. A manager’s achievements can benefit them in their current firm if higher-level management positions become available or if the manager seeks high-level positions with other firms in the future.
Disadvantages:
Increased Pressure
One disadvantage of becoming a manager is that they experience increased pressure to produce results. They are no longer responsible for their productivity alone but the productivity of every employee under their supervision. Managers may need to make tough decisions on behalf of the company. For example, if an employee is under-performing, upper-level management may ask the immediate supervisor to fire the employee. The need to make tough decisions sometimes results in employees not liking managers. This can create a difficult situation for everyone involved and hinder productivity.
Longer Hours
Companies expect managers to produce positive results. Therefore, many managers work long hours to meet the expectations of employers. A disadvantage of working longer hours is most managers are not paid for overtime. Some managers earning high salaries end up earning a relatively low hourly wage because of the hours worked on a weekly basis. Even if a manager earns a competitive salary, he can start to resent his job if required to work many nights, weekends and holidays. Long work hours required by managers limit flexibility and reduce their work/life balance.
