London is the capital of Great Britain. London lies on both banks of the river Thames. It is the largest city in Europe and one of the largest cities in the world.
London is not only the capital of the country. It is also a very big port, one of the greatest commercial centres in the world, a university city, and the seat of the government of Great Britain. The most important parts of London are: the City, the West End, the East End and Westminster. Every year thousands of tourists come to London to go sightseeing. Westminster Abbey is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. Many Great English scientists lie buried there. Among them Newton, Darwin and Watt.
There are many historical places in London. They are St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, the British Museum, Trafalgar Square, Nelson’s column and others. London is very rich in museums and art galleries. If you are fond of painting you'll go to the Tate Gallery. The National Gallery is one of the most important picture galleries in the world. The British Museum is the largest and richest of its kind in the world. The London Eye has become the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom.
