The town was named Stanislav after the Polish magnate Stanislav Pototsky (1752-1805), voivode of Halytsia.The town was under the rule of Poland and Austria. In 1962 the town was renamed in honour of the famous Ukrainian poet Ivan Franko.Ivano-Frankivsk is one of the industrial centres of Ukraine. The leading industries of the city include machine engineering and metal-working, oil and gas refinery, chemical, wood and wood-working, light and food.

Ivano-Frankivsk is a cultural and educational centre. The city has three higher educational establishments, many research establishments of the Academy of Science of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Drama theatre, the Philharmonic Society, and the Transcarpathian Literary museum.There are many monuments of architecture in Ivano-Frankivsk: the City Hall, the Roman-Catholic Church, Collegium, and the Armenian Temple.

All the rest (south, east and centre) is a vast plain which is called the Lowlands. The mountains are not very high. The rivers are not long. There are many beautiful lakes in the mountainous parts of the country. The weather in GB is very changeable. Great Britain is a country with old cultural traditions and customs. The most famous educational centres are Oxford and Cambridge universities. They are considered to be the intellectual centres of Europe. The education is not free, it is very expensive. The United Kingdom is a monarchy and the Queen is the head of state.

Westminster Abbey is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. Many Great English scientists lie buried there. Among them Newton, Darwin and Watt.

There are many historical places in London. They are St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, the British Museum, Trafalgar Square, Nelson’s column and others. London is very rich in museums and art galleries. If you are fond of painting you'll go to the Tate Gallery. The National Gallery is one of the most important picture galleries in the world. The British Museum is the largest and richest of its kind in the world. The London Eye has become the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom. I would like to visit London because it is a great city and there is a lot to see.
