Transmission without multiplexer
Briefly, a multiplexer is a data communications hardware device that allows 8, 16, 32, or more devices (depending on the model) to share a single communications line. Messages sent by a multiplexer must be received by a multiplexer of the same type that splits the messages and directs them to their recipients. A concentrator, which also allows many devices to share a single communications line, is more ‘intelligent’ than a multiplexer because it can be
programmed to temporarily store some transmissions and forward them later. It is also used to multiplex low-speed communications lines onto one high-speed line. A controller also supports a group of devices (terminals and printers) connected to a computer. It is used in place of a multiplexer and acts to control and route transmissions, do error checking and retransmission, and perform other functions for group of terminals. You won’t need to get involved with many complex aspects of multiplexing unless you choose to take a high-level data communications course. If the computer in your office is connected to a multiplexer that is connected to a modem that is connected to a phone line that is connected to another modem connected to, you won’t have to learn more than the relatively simple steps involved to get data from one place to another.
Transmission with multiplexer
Exercises:
1. Give Russian equivalents of the following phrases:
The number of lines; available for that purpose; reducing communications costs; multiplex low-speed communications lines; with many complex aspects; is connected to a multiplexer; you won’t have to learn.
2. Say if the following sentences are true or false.
1. When an organization’s data communications doesn’t need grow, the number of lines available for that purpose often become overtaxed. 2. Messages sent by a multiplexer must be received by a multiplexer of the same type that splits the messages and directs them to their recipients. 3. A controller also supports a group of devices (terminals and printers) connected to a computer. 4. You will need to get involved with many complex aspects of multiplexing unless you choose to take a high-level data communications course. 5. A controller also doesn’t support a group of devices (terminals and printers) connected to a computer.
3. Insert missing words, use the text’s vocabulary:
1. … optimizes the use of communications lines by allowing multiple users or devices to share one high-speed line, thereby reducing communications costs. 2. Messages sent by a … must be received by a multiplexer of the same type that splits the messages and directs them to their recipients. 3. A controller also … a group of devices (terminals and printers) connected to a computer. 4. It is used in place of a … and acts to control and route transmissions, do error checking and retransmission, and perform other functions for group of terminals. 5. If the computer in your office is connected to a multiplexer that is connected to a modem that is … to a phone line that is connected to another modem connected to, you won’t have to learn more than the relatively simple steps involved to get data from one place to another.
