Price risk There are three different types of price risks: currency risk, interest risk and market risk.
Currency risk is a form of risk that arises from the change in price of one currency against another. Whenever investors or companies have assets or business operations across national borders, they face currency risk if their positions are not hedged.
* Transaction risk is the risk that exchange rates will change unfavourably over time. It can be hedged against using forward currency contracts;
* Translation risk is an accounting risk, proportional to the amount of assets held in foreign currencies. Changes in the exchange rate over time will render a report inaccurate, and so assets are usually balanced by borrowings in that currency.
Interest rate risk is the risk (variability in value) borne by an interest-bearing asset, such as a loan or a bond, due to variability of interest rates. In general, as rates rise, the price of a fixed rate bond will fall, and vice versa. Interest rate risk is commonly measured by the bond's duration.
Market risk
Market risk is defined as the risk for changes in the value of a financial instrument due to changed market prices.
Liquidity risk and refinancing risk
Liquidity risk is defined as the risk that the Group would incur increased costs due to lack of liquid funds.
Refinancing risk is defined as the risk that the refinancing of maturing loans becomes difficult or costly. The loans of the Group are mainly long term and only mature when the agreed loan periodexpiresDefinition
Counterparty risks
The risk that the other party in an agreement will default. In an option contract, the risk to the option buyer that the writer will not buy or sell the underlying as agreed. In general, counterparty risk can be reduced by having an organization with extremely good credit act as an intermediary between the two parties.
Cash flow risk
Cash flow risk is defined as the risk that the size of future cash flows linked to financial instruments is fluctuating. This risk is mostly linked to changed interest and currency rates. To the extent that this is perceived as a problem, different derivative instruments are used to fix rates. See description of exposure and hedging measures under interest risk.
Quantitative analysis
A business or financial analysis technique that seeks to understand behavior by using complex mathematical and statistical modeling, measurement and research. By assigning a numerical value to variables, quantitative analysts try to replicate reality mathematically. Quantitative analysis can be done for a number of reasons such as measurement, performance evaluation or valuation of a financial instrument. It can also be used to predict real world events such as changes in a share price.
In broad terms, quantitative analysis is simply a way of measuring things. Examples of quantitative analysis include everything from simple financial ratios such as earnings per share, to something as complicated as discounted cash flow, or option pricing. Although quantitative analysis is a powerful tool for evaluating investments, it rarely tells a complete story without the help of its opposite - qualitative analysis. In financial circles, quantitative analysts are affectionately referred to as "quants", "quant jockeys" or "rocket scientists".
